ELLSWORTH, CUBS STIFLE REDS
Lefty Faces Only 28 in CG Shutout

CINCINNATI, July 1 (AP) - Dick Ellsworth fired a complete game one-hit shutout and faced only 28 batters as the Chicago Cubs whipped the Cincinnati Reds, 3-0 at Crosley Field.  The only batter to reach base against Ellsworth was Frank Robinson, who led off the fifth inning with a solid single to left field.

Ellsworth (10-7) was astonishingly efficient and needed only 76 pitches to fire his seventh complete game of the season.

Reds starter Bob Purkey threw a complete game as well, but ran into trouble in the fourth inning--the only frame that yielded any runs.  Ron Santo opened the inning with a single and advanced to third when Ernie Banks blooped a base hit just inside the foul line in left field.  Len Gabrielson followed with his first home run of the year, a towering fly ball that landed in the right field bleachers, and the Cubs had a 3-0 lead.

Purkey managed to avoid further damage, but Ellsworth was the story of this game.  He retired the first 12 batters he faced on just 27 pitches, then yielded the single to Robinson to open the fifth, and set down the final 15 Reds that came to the plate.

It was the third win in the last four starts for Ellsworth and the fourth consecutive complete game for the Chicago left-hander, who has seen his earned run average drop by more than half a run over that span of time.
