CHISOX BLANK NATS TWICE
Buzhardt, Horlen Both Toss Shutouts

CHICAGO, July 1 (AP) - The Chicago White Sox overwhelmed the Washington Senators in both ends of a doubleheader, shutting out the visitors in the opener and the nightcap en route to the sweep.  John Buzhardt stymied Washington in the opener on just four hits while striking out eight and Joe Horlen fanned 13, tying the American League season high for punch outs, in the nightcap.

The White Sox wasted no time putting game one out of reach.  Floyd Robinson started the merry-go-round by doubling in a run in the first inning and the lead was stretched to 3-0 in the second on Ron Hansen's run-scoring two-bagger and J.C. Martin's RBI single.

Chicago broke the game open with five runs in the third, driving Washington starter Buster Narum from the game in the process.  Don Buford led off the frame with a single and, one out later, Robinson and Pete Ward drew free passes to fill the bases.  Dave Nicholson's sacrifice fly made it 4-0 and left runners on first and third with two outs.  Hansen followed with a single to make it 5-0 and ended Narum's day.  He was replaced by Alan Koch, but things only got worse for the Senators.  Martin doubled home two more runs and Buzhardt helped his own cause with a run-scoring single before the final out of the inning was finally recorded, leaving the White Sox with an extremely comfortable 8-0 advantage.

Buzhardt was cruising through the Washington lineup, meanwhile, and didn't allow a single baserunner past first until Koch doubled with one out in the sixth.  The Senators reliever would advance no farther and was the only man to reach second base for Washington in the entire game.

Though it really wasn't needed, Chicago continued to pile up the runs.  Hansen hit a two-run homer in the fifth to make it 10-0 and a Buford triple followed by an error charged to Senators third baseman John Kennedy produced an unearned run in the sixth.  Two more runs seemed to be almost an afterthought in the eighth inning and accounted for the final score of 13-0.

If the Senators were hoping for a better fate in the nightcap, they would be disappointed.  The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the White Sox dented the scoreboard.  Jim Landis led off the inning with a single and, two outs later, Pete Ward belted a Don Rudolph offering into the upper deck in right field for a two-run homer.

The White Sox increased their lead emphatically in the fourth.  With runners on second and third and two outs, Landis, Al Weis and Mike Hershberger rapped out consecutive singles, plating three runs and giving Chicago a 5-0 advantage.

That was more than enough for Horlen, who only had one jam to deal with.  In the top of the fourth, leading 2-0 at the time, the White Sox starter yielded back-to-back singles to begin the inning to Kennedy and Jim King, putting runners at first and second.  But he struck out Moose Skowron, retired Don Lock on a grounder to short and fanned Don Zimmer to end the inning.  The Senators never got another runner past first base and Horlen went on to retire the final eight batters he faced, including striking out four in a row at one point.

The White Sox put the finishing touch on their 6-0 victory on Pete Ward's second home run of the game--and 15th of the season--in the bottom of the eighth.  The nightcap blanking marked the 13th time the Senators have been shut out this season, by far the most of any team in either league to date this year.
