DOUBLE ONE-HITTER
Downing Comes Out on Top in Pitchers' Duel with
Newman
NEW YORK, June 30 (AP) - Al Downing was the winner of an epic pitchers' duel
with Fred Newman as the New York Yankees clipped the Los Angeles Angels, 1-0 in
the nightcap, to complete a doubleheader sweep in the Bronx. The Yankees
won the opener, 5-3.
Downing took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before surrendering a one-out
single to Jimmy Piersall. The New York left-hander then went on to retire
Willie Smith on strikes and Jim Fregosi on a fielder's choice to end the
game. Downing finished with a pair of walks and 12 strikeouts while coming
up a hair short in his bid for a second no-hitter this season. He fired a
no-hit, no-run game against the Washington Senators on May 3.
In some respects, Newman was even better, despite coming up on the losing end of
the contest. He retired the first four batters he faced, then surrendered
Joe Pepitone's 10th home run of the year with one out in the bottom of the
second inning. He then set down the next nine hitters before Hector Lopez
reached base on first baseman Joe Adcock's error in the fifth. He finished
off the game by retiring the next 11 Yankees batters. For the game, Newman
needed only 75 pitches to complete eight innings.
Downing walked Jim Fregosi with two outs in the top of the first and then
retired 12 Angels in a row before Bobby Knoop drew a two-out walk in the
fifth. He set down the next 11 batters consecutively before losing the
no-hitter on Piersall's single.
In all, only five batters reached base in the game and Pepitone was the only one
to advance past first.
Downing became the third pitcher in the major leagues this season to lose a
no-hitter in the ninth inning. His teammate, Jim Bouton, fell one out
short when he gave up a hit to Don Zimmer of the Senators on May 2, the day
before Downing turned in the season's only no-no. Jim Maloney of the
Cincinnati Reds also came up one batter short of immortality when he surrendered
a hit to Lou Brock, then of the Chicago Cubs, on May 23.
