BOSOX GO BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK, OVERCOME TRIBE
Lamabe Fires CG in DH Opener

BOSTON, June 28 (AP) - Trailing 3-0 in the eighth inning, Dalton Jones, Felix Mantilla and Carl Yastrzemski hit consecutive home runs to tie the game and the Red Sox pushed across the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth to trip the Cleveland Indians, 4-3, at Fenway Park in the opener of a doubleheader.

Cleveland starter Pedro Ramos took a shutout into the eighth inning and retired the first two batters easily.  But Jones drilled Ramos' first offering into the bullpen in right field to break the shutout.  Mantilla followed by drilling a 1-1 offering into the screen above the left field wall, cutting the deficit to one run and sending Ramos to the showers in the process in favor of Ted Abernathy.  Yastrzemski greeted Abernathy by drilling a tape measure shot into the right field stands to tie the game.

In the bottom of the ninth, Lee Thomas singled and, one out later, advanced to scoring position when Eddie Bressoud drew a free pass.  Roman Mejias was summoned to pinch run for Thomas, who represented the potential winning run.  Russ Nixon grounded a base hit through the box, scoring Mejias and giving the Red Sox the victory.

The Indians had taken the lead in the fifth inning on Al Smith's solo home run and extended the lead to 3-0 in the sixth.  Vic Davalillo doubled with one out and Leon Wagner walked.  Johnny Romano flied to center, but Fred Whitfield doubled high off the left-center field wall, scoring both Davalillo and Wagner.

Jack Lamabe tossed a complete game and earned just his third win of the year in 13 decisions.  The victory snapped a seven-game Boston losing streak.

The Red Sox became just the second team this season to hit three consecutive home runs.  The Pittsburgh Pirates hit three home runs in a row in the first inning of an 8-7 loss to the New York Mets in the opening game of a doubleheader on April 26.
