BOWENS' PH BOMB IN 13TH CAPS O'S COMEBACK
Rally From 4-Run Deficit in 8th
BALTIMORE, June 21 (AP) - Sam Bowens hit a game-winning pinch hit home run with
one out in the bottom of the 13th inning to lead the Baltimore Orioles past the
Boston Red Sox, 6-5, at Memorial Stadium. Bowens, who was a last second
replacement for Harvey Haddix, made a loser of Arnold Earley (2-2) and provided
the capstone to a Baltimore comeback that saw the Orioles rally from a 5-1
deficit with four eighth inning runs.
Each team pushed across a single run in the fifth inning. Tony
Conigliaro's RBI ground out scored Bob Tillman, who led off the frame with a
single, with Boston's opening run. Willie Kirkland's one-out solo home run
off Red Sox starter Earl Wilson knotted the game in the bottom half of the
inning.
The Red Sox broke the tie in the top of the seventh against Orioles starter
Steve Barber. Again, Tillman led off the inning with a base hit and moved
to second on Wilson's ground out. Chuck Schilling then doubled into the
left field corner, giving Boston a 2-1 lead. That marked the end of the
road for Barber, who was replaced on the mound by Dick Hall. Hall
extracted the Orioles from any further difficulty in the seventh.
But in the top of the eighth, Boston seemingly broke the game open. With
one out, back-to-back doubles by Lee Thomas and Eddie Bressoud made it
3-1. Tillman then grounded out, but Wilson helped his own cause with a
drive into the left field bleachers. The two-run homer upped the Red Sox
lead to 5-1.
The Orioles opened the eighth with consecutive singles off the bats of Jerry
Adair and Boog Powell and Boston manager Johnny Pesky summoned reliever Dick
Radatz to the mound to replace Wilson. Radatz walked Norm Seibern to fill
the bases, bringing the potential tying run to the plate in the form of Brooks
Robinson. Radatz then walked the Baltimore third baseman, forcing in a run
and cutting the lead to 5-2. Gino Cimoli was called upon to pinch hit for
Hall and he drove an 0-1 pitch into the left-center field gap, clearing the
bases and tying the game at five. Cimoli was cut down trying to stretch a
double into a triple, but the entire complexion of the game had changed.
Neither team scored in the ninth, but in the bottom of the 10th, the Orioles
threatened to win the game. Radatz was still on the hill and walked
Siebern leading off the inning. Robinson tried to sacrifice Siebern to
second, but the bunt was so good that he beat it out for a hit, putting runners
on first and second. Cimoli, who had stayed in the game following his
pinch hitting heroics the previous inning, popped to second for the first
out. Rocky Johnson then singled sharply to second, with Siebern holding at
third. Charlie Lau, pinch hitting for pitcher Stu Miller, then flied to
shallow right, with the runners holding. Radatz completed his Houdini act
by striking out Dick Brown to end the inning.
Haddix replaced Miller on the mound and held the Red Sox scoreless through the
top of the 13th inning.
In the bottom half of the 13th, Lau, who had remained in the game, flied to
center for the first out. Haddix had been in the on deck circle and
actually started to walk towards home plate when he was called back by Baltimore
manager Hank Bauer and was replaced by Bowens. Bowens moved ahead of
Earley 1-0 and, guessing fastball, got it and drove the ball well into the left
field seats for the game-winning home run.
