A'S OUT-HOMER NATS IN SLUGFEST DH OPENER
Skowron's 3 HRs, 10 RBIs Helps Nats Salvage Split
KANSAS CITY, June 21 (AP) - Moose Skowron went 6-for-10 with three home runs and
ten runs driven in to help the Washington Senators earn a split of a
doubleheader with the Kansas City Athletics with a 9-7 nightcap victory.
In the opener, the two teams combined for a major league season high 10 home
runs, seven of them by the A's--also a big league season best--as Kansas City
won, 12-10.
The Senators scored solo runs in the first and second innings of the
opener. Skowron began his big day with a run-scoring single, plating Don
Blasingame in the first. Eddie Brinkman's sacrifice fly scored Don Zimmer,
who had tripled leading off the second.
But the fireworks began in earnest in the bottom half of the second. Jim
Gentile led off with a single and Billy Bryan hit the game's first home run into
the right field seats, tying the contest at two. Manny Jimenez immediately
followed with a home run of his own to give Kansas City a 3-2 edge.
The longball assault continued in the bottom of the fourth when Jimenez belted
his second roundtripper of the game and was followed, one out later, by pitcher
Orlando Pena's circuit clout to put the A's on top, 5-2.
Not to be outdone, Washington rebounded for four runs in the fifth. Dick
Phillips pinch hit for pitcher Buster Narum leading off the inning and
singled. Blasingame grounded out, but Chuck Hinton drew a walk from
Pena. Jim King rolled into a fielder's choice for the second out but
Skowron cleared the bases by cracking his seventh home run of the year, tying
the game at five. Pena was replaced on the mound by Wes Stock who
immediately surrendered Don Lock's 11th home run of the season, moving the
Senators in front, 6-5.
Seemingly angered, Kansas City exploded for six runs in its half of the fifth
inning against reliever Dave Stenhouse. Ed Charles led off with a base hit
and trotted home ahead of Rocky Colavito, who launched his 16th home run of the
year over the left field wall, giving the A's the lead for good. Gentile
walked and Bryan singled, and after Jimenez and Nelson Mathews were retired,
Stock aided his own cause with a base hit, scoring Gentile. Wayne Causey
then applied the coup de grace with a long home run to right, giving the A's an
11-6 advantage.
The Senators didn't quit, however, and closed to within one run in the
seventh. Blasingame led off with a single and scored on Hinton's home run,
cutting the deficit to 11-8. King doubled and Skowron drove home his fifth
run of the game with a base hit. Stock was lifted in favor of Moe
Drabowsky who yielded consecutive singles to Lock and Mike Brumely to fill the
bases. Zimmer's sacrifice fly made it 11-10 but Drabowsky avoided further
difficulty by inducing a double play grounder from Brinkman.
The A's picked up an insurance run on Dick Green's leadoff homer in the eighth
and John Wyatt set down Washington in order in the ninth to secure the win.
The nightcap was almost as wild. The Senators burst out to a 3-0 lead in
the top of the first inning. Brinkman singled, moved to second on an
infield out and then scored on Hinton's double. Skowron picked up where he
left off in the opener with a base hit to drive home his sixth run of the
afternoon. Lock's walk moved Skowron to second and then a passed ball and
an infield grounder scored the third run of the inning.
The A's scored twice in the second on Doc Edwards' RBI ground out and Mathews'
double.
Back-to-back home runs by Skowron and Lock--the second of the day for both
players--in the third restored the Senators' three-run lead, but only
momentarily. Dick Green led off the third with a single and Ed Charles
hammered his third home run of the season to cut the Senators' lead to
5-4.
Kansas City knotted the game in the fifth. Green singled leading off and
was forced at second by Ed Charles, who stole second base and scored on
Colavito's single.
The A's took the lead for the first time in the sixth on back-to-back doubles
off the bats of Mathews and pinch hitter George Williams.
Washington regained the lead--for good, as it turned out--in the seventh.
Moe Drabowsky came on to pitch for the second time on the day and ran into
trouble right away. With one out, John Kennedy singled and moved to second
when Hinton drew a walk, which brought Skowron to the plate. The red hot
first baseman didn't disappoint, driving a Drabowsky fastball over the left
field wall for a three-run homer. It was Skowron's third home run of the
day and gave him 10 runs batted in on the afternoon. It also gave the
Senators an 8-6 lead.
The Senators added an insurance run in the ninth when Kennedy doubled and scored
on Hinton's single.
The A's managed to push a run across, with the aid of a passed ball, in the
bottom of the ninth, but could draw no closer off Washington reliever Steve
Kline.
The home runs hit by Skowron broke a drought that had been in place since May
24, a span of 72 at-bats.
