JOHN FANS 12, TRIBE BLANKS HALOS
Newman Tosses 5-Hit CG in Loss

LOS ANGELES, June 20 (AP) - Tommy John struck out 12 en route to a five-hit complete game shutout and the Cleveland Indians squeezed past the Los Angeles Angels, 1-0, in a pitcher's duel at Chavez Ravine.  Fred Newman was the hard luck loser for the Angels, tossing a complete game five-hitter of his own.

The game's only run came in the very first inning.  Dick Howser led off the game with a walk and advanced to third on Vic Davalillo's single to right field.  The Angels played for the first inning double play and got it when Leon Wagner grounded to shortstop Jim Fregosi, who started the twin killing.  Howser scored on the play and Cleveland had the only run it would need.

The Indians put the first two batters on base in the second inning as well, but Newman pitched out of trouble and went on to set down the next 12 Cleveland batters in order.

John, meanwhile, kept the Angels completely at bay until the fifth inning.  Bob Perry drew a leadoff walk and Bob Rodgers followed with a single to left, putting runners at first and second.  John then fanned Bobby Knoop and Newman, bringing Jimmy Piersall to the plate with two outs.  A 1-0 wild pitch moved the runners to second and third and John walked Piersall intentionally to fill the bases.  Vic Power then grounded to Max Alvis, who stepped on the bag at third for the force to end the threat.

That turned out to be the best chance the Angels would have.  John retired 12 of the next 14 batters.  Perry grounded a single to left with two outs in the ninth, but pinch hitter Felix Torres ended the game as John's 12th strikeout victim.  The left-handed hurler became just the third American League pitcher to fan 12 or more batters in a game this season.  John's teammate, Sam McDowell, struck out 12 Athletics on June 12 and Al Downing of the Yankees fanned 13 of John's Cleveland teammates on May 27.
