11TH INNING SLAM COMPLETES BENGALS' SWEEP
Tigers Pull Within 1 Game of 1st
DETROIT, June 16 (AP) - George Thomas belted a two-out grand slam in the bottom
of the 11th inning of the second game, giving the Detroit Tigers a 6-2 victory
and a doubleheader sweep of the Kansas City A's.
In the opener, Hank Aguirre and a pair of relievers pitched around nine walks to
secure a 6-2 win in regulation. Al Kaline hit his sixth home run of the
year and drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers. Rocky Colavito hit his
14th long ball of the year for the A's in a losing cause.
The nightcap featured a strong pitchers duel between Ted Bowsfield of Kansas
City and Phil Regan of Detroit. The Tigers scored first, pushing across a
run in the second inning when Dick McAuliffe and Bubba Phillips led of with
consecutive singles and Mike Roarke drove home McAuliffe on a fielder's choice
grounder.
The A's took the lead with a pair of runs in the third inning. With two
outs, Wayne Causey singled and Nelson Mathews drove a Regan change up just
inside the left field foul pole to give Kansas City a 2-1 advantage.
The Tigers tied the game in the fourth on an unearned run. Roarke's
two-out grounder was booted by first baseman Jim Gentile for an error and Regan
then helped his own cause by roping a triple into the left field corner.
The game remained tied into extra innings, and both starters were gone when
Detroit won the game in the 11th. With A's reliever Jose Santiago in his
second frame of work, Phillips and pinch hitter Norm Cash were quickly
retired. But Santiago hit Kaline with a pitch to keep the inning alive and
then walked Jerry Lumpe. Bill Bruton pinch hit for Joe Sparma and drew a
base on balls to fill the bases. That brought Thomas to the plate and he
drilled the first pitch he saw from Santiago into the lower seats in straight
away left field to give the Tigers the victory.
With the sweep, Detroit has won six consecutive games and stands in fourth
place, just a game behind co-leaders Chicago and Baltimore in the race for the
American League flag.
