DO IT ALL KAAT KEYS TWINS' SWEEP OF NATS
CG, 2 HRs Pace 6-1 Game 2 Win
WASHINGTON, June 14 (AP) - Jim Kaat fired a complete game five hitter and aided
his own cause with a pair of home runs and four runs batted in as the Minnesota
Twins completed a doubleheader sweep of the Washington Senators with a 6-1 game
two victory at D.C. Stadium.
In the opener, Zoilo Versalles continued his recovery from a season long funk
with a 4-for-4 performance, including a pair of solo home runs and three runs
scored as the Twins walloped the Senators, 9-2. Versalles finished the day
with six hits in eight at bats, raising his season average to .227.
Versalles was hitting just .195 as recently as June 6, but over his last nine
games the Minnesota shortstop is 16-for-41 (.390) with four home runs and has
been moved up to the top of the order by Twins manager Sam Mele.
In the second game of the twin bill, Kaat spotted the Senators a first inning
run when Moose Skowron doubled home Chuck Hinton, who had singled earlier in the
frame. From that point on it was all Twins, with a heavy dose of Kaat in
both halves of each inning.
The Twins took the lead for good with a four-run second inning off Washington
starter Tom Cheney. Harmon Killebrew led off the inning with a single and
took second on Bob Allison's base hit. A passed ball charged to Senators
backstop Don Leppert moved both runners into scoring position and Jimmie Hall's
grounder to second scored Killebrew to tie the game and advanced Allison to
third with one out. Johnny Goryl singled home Allison, putting Minnesota
ahead 2-1. Jerry Zimmerman's foul pop to first was the second out of the
inning, bringing Kaat to the plate. The damage seemed to be contained, but
Kaat deposited a 1-1 Cheney fastball into the right field bullpen to give the
Twins a three-run advantage.
The score remained 4-1 until the top of the fifth when Kaat helped himself
again. Cheney hit Zimmerman with a pitch to lead off the inning, but got
ahead of Kaat--who had been trying to sacrifice the runner to second--0-2 and
tried to slip a fastball past the Twins starter. Kaat's drive just cleared
the right-center field fence for a two-run homer--his second of the contest--and
the Minnesota lead was 6-1.
Kaat finished the game with three hits--the third being a two-out seventh inning
single. On the mound, he held the Senators scoreless on just two hits
after the first inning run en route to his fifth complete game of the
season.
Having completed the sweep, the Twins have won four straight contests and have
pulled to within 6 1/2 games of first place in the American League.
