KOUFAX FANS 17 IN WHITEWASH OF CARDS
2nd Straight L.A. Shutout
LOS ANGELES, June 12 (AP) - Sandy Koufax struck out a major league season high
17 batters en route to a complete game shutout as the Los Angeles Dodgers eked
out a 1-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. It was the second
consecutive blanking by Los Angeles over St. Louis at Dodger Stadium; Don
Drysdale turned the trick yesterday. It was the fourth straight defeat for
the Cardinals.
Koufax, who has suffered through miserable run support--an average of only 2.5
runs per game--this season made a single tally by his teammates stand up and, in
the process, obliterated the previous high strikeout game in the major leagues
this season (13, a mark he himself had shared with Jim Maloney and Sammy Ellis
of the Cincinnati Reds and Al Downing of the New York Yankees). In this
contest, Koufax surpassed the previous high watermark in the seventh inning.
The Dodgers left-hander needed to be overpowering because his teammates did next
to nothing against Cardinals starter Ernie Broglio (3-4), whose own outstanding
effort was overshadowed by Koufax's dominance. Los Angeles hitters managed
only three hits off Broglio--all of them singles--and drew one walk.
The game's only run came in the fourth. Jim Gilliam led off the frame with
a single and advanced to third when Willie Davis blooped a base hit just inside
the right field foul line. Broglio than induced Wally Moon to rap into a
4-6-3 double play, but Gilliam scored to account for the Dodgers' sole
tally. Broglio went on to retire 13 of the final 14 batters he faced and
Los Angeles never threatened to score again.
Koufax, meanwhile, struck out the side in the first, fourth and fifth innings,
fanning six consecutive batters at one point, tying Bob Lee of the Los Angeles
Angels for the longest such streak in the major leagues this year. Through
five innings, Koufax had notched 10 strikeouts.
With 15 strikeouts to his credit through seven innings, Koufax ran into trouble
in the eighth. Curt Flood started off the frame with a single to right and
advanced to second on Dick Groat's soft infield grounder. Bill White then
tapped a swinging bunt up the third base line that went for an infield single,
moving Flood to third. But Ken Boyer lined to shortstop Maury Wills for
the second out of the inning and Koufax struck out Charlie James for the third
time in the contest, escaping the inning unscathed.
In the ninth, Koufax made Carl Warwick his 17th strikeout victim of the game and
retired Julian Javier and Tim McCarver on a grounder to short and foul pop to
third respectively. The shutout was the fourth of the season for Koufax,
placing him second in that category to teammate Drysdale, who has seven.
The 11 combined shutouts for Koufax and Drysdale are three more than any other
National League team has accumulated thus far this year.
