DRYSDALE STYMIES CARDS; FIRES 7TH SHUTOUT
Right-Hander Wins 12th Game of Season
LOS ANGELES, June 11 (AP) - Don Drysdale tossed a five-hit complete game shutout
and Los Angeles snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory over the
St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium. It was the seventh shutout of the
season for Drysdale, in 15 starts. Only one other pitcher in the National
League has more than two shutouts thus far this year: Dyrsdale's teammate, Sandy
Koufax, who has three. The complete game was Drysdale's ninth, tying him
for the NL lead in that category with Juan Marichal of the San Francisco Giants.
The Dodgers scored the only run Drysdale would need in the first inning off
Cardinals starter Ray Washburn (2-5). Maury Wills led off the frame with a
single and advanced to second on Jim Gilliam's hit-and-run ground out.
Willie Davis followed by bouncing a single into right field to score Wills.
Two innings later, Los Angeles capped the game's scoring. Drysdale started
things off by blooping a single just inside the right field line, and a Washburn
wild pitch moved him to second. Wills popped to short for the first out,
but Gilliam singled to right, with Drysdale moving to third. Davis
grounded to short, forcing Wills at second, but Drysdale scored to put the
Dodgers on top, 2-0.
The best chance for St. Louis to dent the scoreboard came in the top of the
third inning. Carl Warwick drew a leadoff walk and Julian Javier's single
chased him to third. But Washburn lined out to third baseman Ken Boyer who
doubled up the startled Warwick, taking the wind out of the Cardinals'
sails. Curt Flood lined to left field to end the threat. St. Louis
never had another runner in scoring position with less than two outs, in a game
that didn't include a single extra base hit by either club.
The victory for Drysdale was his 12th, easily the most in the major leagues thus
far this season. The big right-hander's quest for the NL Cy Young Award
continues, as he resides among the league leaders in virtually every significant
pitching category.
