PIZARRO TOSSES 2ND STRAIGHT SHUTOUT
ChiSox Eke Out 'W' Over O's
CHICAGO, June 9 (AP) - Juan Pizarro fired his second consecutive shutout--and
third of the season--as the Chicago White Sox squeezed past the Baltimore
Orioles and hard luck loser Dave McNally, 1-0, on a damp evening at Comiskey
Park. The victory pulled the White Sox to within 2 1/2 games of the first
place Orioles.
The game was a pitchers' duel par excellence. Neither club pushed a
baserunner past first until the top of the sixth inning when the Orioles put
runners on first and second with two outs but failed to score when Pizarro
struck out Sam Bowens to end the inning.
The White Sox had one good scoring opportunity in the entire game and made it
count. In the bottom of the sixth, Cam Carreon led off with a
single. Pizarro struck out, but Mike Hershberger drew a walk, putting
runners at first and second. Al Weis then doubled off the left field wall,
scoring Carreon and advancing Hershberger to second. It appeared that
Chicago had a chance to break the game open, but McNally fanned Floyd Robinson
and Pete Ward to end the inning with no further damage.
The Orioles had their best chance to break through against Pizarro in the
seventh when Brooks Robinson drew a one-out walk and Boog Powell singled to
right. When right fielder Floyd Robinson misplayed the ball, both runners
advanced, putting the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with
only one out. But as McNally had done in the sixth, Pizarro came up big,
striking out Gino Cimoli for the second out. Dick Brown was walked
intentionally and then Pizarro fanned pinch hitter Bob Johnson to extinguish the
threat.
Dick Hall replaced McNally and retired the White Sox in order in the seventh and
eighth innings. Jerry Adair led off the top of the eighth for the Orioles
with a single but was immediately erased by a Luis Aparicio double play grounder
and the Orioles never had another baserunner as Pizarro set down the side in
order in the ninth.
In posting the shutout, the White Sox left-hander extended his scoreless innings
streak to 21 2/3, the longest current mark in the major leagues. With one
more scoreless frame, Pizarro will hold the third longest such streak this
season.
After a difficult beginning to the season, Pizarro has found his form of
late. In his last five starts, he has four wins--three of them
shutouts--against only one loss and has posted a 1.26 ERA, throwing 43 innings
while allowing only 22 hits and six walks and striking out 34 batters.
