DODGERS 6-RUN 9TH CAPS COMEBACK WIN OVER METS
Overcome 5-Run Deficit
NEW YORK, June 6 (AP) - The Los Angeles Dodgers overcame a 9-4 deficit with six
runs in the top of the ninth inning and went on to defeat the New York Mets,
10-9, at Shea Stadium. The five-run ninth inning deficit is the largest
overcome in a major league game this year.
The Mets seemed to break the game open in the bottom of the first with five runs
off Los Angeles starter Phil Ortega. Ed Kranepool drew a bases loaded walk
accounting for the first run and Charley Smith followed by driving an Ortega
fastball into the left field bullpen for a grand slam and a 5-0 New York lead.
But the Dodgers responded with three runs in the second off Mets starter Jack
Fisher on Johnny Roseboro's second home run of the season. The three-run
blow cut the Mets' lead to 5-3.
Roy McMillan's home run leading off the bottom of the second upped the New York
advantage to three and drove Ortega from the mound. The Dodgers countered
with an unearned run in the top of the third when Willie Davis reached on a
leadoff error and later scored on Wes Parker's single. But the Mets
regained their three-run advantage in the bottom of the third when Hawk Taylor
doubled with one out and eventually scored on Fisher's base hit.
The pitching finally settled down and the score remained 7-4 in favor of the
Mets until the seventh when New York seemed to break open the contest once and
for all when Taylor's two-run home run upped the lead to five.
The New York advantage was 9-4 as the Dodgers came to bat in the top of the
ninth against Larry Bearnarth, who had entered the game and extinguished a Los
Angeles threat in the eighth. The inning opened on an ominous note for the
Mets when Wally Moon led off with his first home run of the year, cutting the
lead to four runs. Ron Fairly popped to second for the first out, but
Parker and Roseboro drew back-to-back walks. Tommy Davis pinch hit for Ron
Perranoski and promptly doubled to left, scoring Fairly and advancing Roseboro
to third. The score was now 9-6 and the tying run was coming to the
plate. Tom Sturdivant replaced Bearnarth on the mound for the Mets but
immediately surrendered a single to Johnny Werhas, scoring Roseboro and Davis
and chopping the lead to 9-8. Maury Wills flied to center for the second
out, but Jim Gilliam walked. Willie Davis then laced a double to
left-center, scoring both runners and giving the Dodgers the lead for the first
time in the game. Moon walked, but Fairly finally ended the inning with a
fly ball to right field.
Bob Miller came on to pitch the ninth for the Dodgers and quickly recorded two
outs. Amado Samuel was the last hope for the Mets and he grounded to
shortstop Wills whose throw to first was low for an error, allowing the
potential tying run to reach base. But Miller buckled down and retired
Taylor on a fielder's choice grounder to end the game.
