10-RUN 2ND AIDS YANKS ROMP OVER TWINS
Downing Posts 4-Hit Shuout; Howard Belts Slam

BLOOMINGTON, Minn., June 4 (AP) - The New York Yankees exploded for ten runs in the second inning, with Elston Howard's grand slam the capping blow, and cruised past the Minnesota Twins, 12-0, for the club's ninth win in its last 11 games.  Al Downing tossed his second shutout of the season, never letting up despite the large lead.

Minnesota's Jim Perry was making his first--and almost certainly last--start of the season, but after posting a scoreless first inning, fell apart in the second.  Joe Pepitone led off by reaching on an error by second baseman Bernie Allen and advanced to second when Hector Lopez drew a base on balls.  Howard then singled, loading the bases, and Clete Boyer promptly singled to left, scoring Pepitone and Lopez to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.  Downing struck out, but Tony Kubek's single refilled the bases and Perry's wild pitch advanced all three runners 90 feet, scoring Howard and upping the New York lead to three runs.  Bobby Richardson then doubled home both Boyer and Kubek to put the Yankees on top 5-0.  Tom Tresh made it 6-0 when he drove home Richardson with a base hit and when Roger Maris singled Tresh to third, Perry was replaced on the mound by Gerry Arrigo.  He retired Pepitone--the tenth batter of the inning--on a pop fly to short for the second out, but Lopez walked for the second time in the inning and the bases were loaded yet again.  That brought the league's leading hitter to the plate in the form of Howard and he belted an Arrigo offering over the center field fence for a grand slam and a 10-0 Yankees advantage.  Boyer popped to first for the final out, but not until the outcome of the contest had all but been decided.

The Yankees pushed two more runs across in the fourth, on Lopez's 10th home run of the season, accounting for the final margin of victory.

Downing was in command the entire way, allowing only four hits and two walks while fanning nine en route to his fifth victory and third complete game of the season and closed out the contest in style, striking out the side in the ninth inning.

Howard finished the game with four more hits and his batting average now stands at .401.  It was Howard's ninth consecutive multi-hit game of the season; during this span he's 24-for-38 with three doubles, three home runs and 15 runs batted in.
