CLONINGER, CARTY KEY BRAVES SWEEP
1-Hitter in Nightcap Stifles Cubs
CHICAGO, May 30 (AP) - Tony Cloninger fired a complete game one-hitter and Rico
Carty accounted for all of the scoring as the Milwaukee Braves completed a
doubleheader sweep of the Chicago Cubs with a 2-0 victory in the nightcap at
Wrigley Field. Cloninger's 1-hitter was the fifth in the major leagues
this year and the third in the National League. The Cubs have been victims
twice; Jim Maloney of Cincinnati one-hit Chicago on May 23.
The only runs of the game were scored in the third inning off Cubs starter
Sterling Slaughter. Eddie Mathews drew a one out free pass--one of seven
walks issued by the right-hander--and Carty followed with his fourth home run of
the year, into the bleachers in left-center field. The Braves threatened
to score again throughout the contest, but Slaughter managed to wiggle out of
trouble during his seven innings of work. Reliever Wayne Schurr worked a
pair of scoreless innings for Chicago.
The Cubs never came close to scoring off Cloninger, who faced only 28 batters in
the entire game. Catcher Jimmie Schaffer's one-out single in the third
inning was the only Chicago safety. Ernie Banks drew a leadoff walk in the
fifth, but that baserunner was erased in a double play. Lou Brock also
walked, to start the seventh inning, but he too was eliminated by a double play
grounder. Schaffer, who eventually reached second base following his third
inning hit, was the only runner left on base by the Cubs.
The Braves won the opener of the twinbill, 4-3, but had to come from behind to
do so. The Cubs scored three runs off Milwaukee starter Bob Sadowski in
the fourth inning. Stewart drew a base on balls to open the frame and was
forced at second by Lou Brock's fielder's choice grounder. Brock then
stole second and Billy Williams was hit by a pitch. Ron Santo flied to
left for the second out, but Ernie Banks followed by launching his ninth home
run of the year into the left field bleachers to give Chicago a 3-0 advantage.
The Braves tied the game off Bob Buhl in the sixth. Mathews drew a one-out
walk and scored all the way from first base on Carty's double. Henry Aaron
followed with a two-bagger of his own, scoring Carty and pulling the Braves to
within a single run. Ed Bailey's single brought Aaron home and evened the
score.
With two outs in the seventh, Mathews gave Milwaukee the lead with a home run
that landed on the catwalk in right field, just inside the foul pole.
The Braves gave Chicago several chances to score over the final two innings,
committing three errors, but the Cubs never hit the ball out of the infield as
Sadowski wrapped up a three-hit complete game. The Cubs, who entered the
day as one of the top offensive teams in the NL, managed only four hits in total
over the doubleheader's two games, finishing the afternoon 4-for-55.
