CUBS OUTLAST BRAVES IN HIGH-SCORING WRIGLEY DOUBLEFEST
Teams Combine for 18 Two-Baggers; 5 More Hits for Williams

CHICAGO, May 29 (AP) - In a contest more reminiscent of football than baseball, the Chicago Cubs outslugged the Milwaukee Braves, 17-14, at windy Wrigley Field. The game included 23 extra base hits between the two teams, including a 18 doubles, 16 of them in the first five innings. Eddie Mathews of the Braves banged out three two-baggers all by himself. The Cubs, meanwhile, scored at least one run in each of the eight innings in which they batted and both teams had cracked double figures in the run column before the top of the fourth was over.

After the Braves broke on top with a run in the first inning, the Cubs countered with four in the home half, when Lou Brock, Andre Rodgers and Billy Williams hit back-to-back-to-back doubles to lead off the frame against Milwaukee starter Denny Lemaster and Ron Santo followed with a home run into the left field bleachers, putting Chicago on top, 4-1.

The Braves countered with four runs of their own in the top of the second. Gene Oliver led off with a grounder to short that Rodgers booted for an error. Rico Carty singled Oliver to second and Denis Menke followed with a double, scoring both runners. Frank Bolling grounded out, moving Menke to third and Lemaster singled him home. Mathews followed with his second double of the game, moving Lemaster to third and Lee Maye's sacrifice fly made it 5-4 in favor of the Braves.

Undaunted, the Cubs exploded for five more runs in the bottom of the second, driving Lemaster from the mound.  With one out, Williams hit his 11th home run of the season and Santo followed with a double.  That was it for Lemaster, who was replaced by Dan Schneider, but the Cubs didn't let up.  Ernie Banks grounded to short for the second out of the inning, but Joey Amalfitano walked and Dick Bertell was hit by a pitch, loading the bases.  Billy Cowan then unloaded them, by blasting a grand slam and giving the Cubs a 9-5 lead.

Incredibly, the Braves came back with four more runs in the top of the third, knocking Chicago starter Glen Hobbie out of the box in the process.  With one out, Oliver singled and Carty's base hit advanced him to third.  Menke walked to fill the bases and Bolling drew a base on balls of his own, scoring Oliver.  Schneider fanned for the second out, but Mathews delivered the big hit.  His third double in as many plate appearances cleared the bases and tied the game at nine.

Banks' two-run double in the bottom of the third allowed the Cubs to regain the lead, though the Braves kept fighting.  Consecutive two-out doubles by Carty and Menke tallied a fourth inning run, but the Cubs countered in their half of the inning with Rodgers' two-out RBI double, giving Chicago a 12-10 lead after four.

Milwaukee seized the advantage in the top of the fifth with three more runs against reliever Don Elston, on Lee Maye's RBI single and Oliver's two-run double, but Chicago tied the game in the bottom half on an Amalfitano sacrifice fly.

When the Braves came up empty in the top of the sixth it represented the first scoreless half-inning of the contest.  The Cubs immediately took advantage by retaking the lead--this time for good--in the bottom half of the frame on Cowan's leadoff home run--his second of the game and fifth of the year.  The Cubs padded that lead with two more runs in the seventh on a run scoring hit by Santo and a double play groundball.  Chicago then added an insurance run in the eighth on Brock's RBI single, and took a 17-13 lead into the ninth.

Facing Lindy McDaniel in his second inning of work, the Braves got the tying run to the plate.  With one out, pinch hitter Joe Torre belted the game's 18th double and moved to third on Mathews' single.  Maye fouled out, but Henry Aaron kept the game going with a single to right, scoring Torre and moving Mathews to third.  Ed Bailey came to the plate as the tying run, but McDaniel induced a grounder to short to end the game.

Between the two teams, ten players banged out at least two hits.  For the Cubs, Billy Williams, who has been on fire lately, finished 5-for-6 with five runs scored and Ron Santo went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three driven in.  Billy Cowan was 4-for-5 with two home runs and a triple as well as five RBIs and three runs scored.  Eddie Mathews was 4-for-5 for the Braves, with three doubles and three runs driven home.

The 18 doubles the two teams hit dwarfed the next highest total in a major league game by two teams--10.  The 31 runs the two teams scored also represents a major league season high, along with the 37 hits the two clubs managed.
