JACKSON LOSES NO-HITTER IN 8TH, SETTLES FOR SHUTOUT
2 More Hits for Red Hot Williams
CHICAGO, May 28 (AP) - Larry Williams carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning
and ultimately settled for a complete game two-hit shutout as the Chicago Cubs
defeated the New York Mets, 3-0, at Wrigley Field. Charlie Smith of the
Mets spoiled Jackson's no-hit bid with a clean single to left field with two
outs in the eighth. The only other New York safety came with one out in
the ninth off the bat of pinch hitter Hawk Taylor. He was immediately
erased in a game-ending double play grounder.
The Cubs picked up the only run they would need in the very first inning.
Jimmy Stewart singled to lead off the frame and stole second base. Lou
Brock followed with a run-scoring single to right field and it was 1-0, Chicago.
The one-run lead stood up until the seventh as Mets starter Galen Cisco held the
Cubs at bay. But Ernie Banks led off the bottom of the seventh with a home
run, hit into the teeth of a stiff wind, into the left field bleachers to
advance the Cubs' lead to two runs.
Chicago capped the scoring with an unearned run off reliever Craig Anderson in
the eighth. Mets first baseman Dick Smith booted Jackson's infield roller
to start the inning and Stewart followed with a would-be sacrifice attempt that
went for a bunt single. Brock then sacrificed the runners to second and
third. Billy Williams was walked intentionally to fill the bases and
Jackson scored on Ron Santo's weak tapper down the first base line.
The Mets drew leadoff walks from Jackson in the second and third innings but did
nothing with them. After Smith walked to open the third, Jackson retired
the next 17 Mets in a row before yielding the Smith single in the eighth.
No New York runner advanced beyond first base.
Williams had a pair of singles and drew two walks in four plate appearances,
continuing his red hot hitting. Over his last 10 days, the Cubs left
fielder is hitting .417 (17-for-41) with seven home runs.
