COLAVITO STARS AS A'S SWEEP DH FROM BOSOX
8 Hits, 5 Runs and 5 RBIs
BOSTON, May 24 (AP) - Rocky Colavito had a huge day and the Kansas City
Athletics went on to whip the Boston Red Sox, sweeping a doubleheader by scores
of 10-6 and 9-2 at Fenway Park. The A's right fielder finished the
afternoon 8-for-9 with two home runs (both in the first game) a triple, five
runs scored and five more driven in. Colavito is the American League's
leader in runs batted in and is among the league leaders in virtually every
significant offensive category.
In the opener, the A's ran out to a big lead early on, and held on for the
four-run victory. Kansas City bounced Boston starter Jack Lamabe (2-5)
from the game in the fourth and made a winner of starter Moe Drabowsky (4-2),
though the bullpen ultimately played a major role in the victory.
The two teams exchanged runs in the first inning, with Colavito driving home the
Kansas City run on a fielder's choice--the only time on the day he failed to
reach base safely. Boston countered in the home half of the frame with
Tony Conigliaro's solo home run to tie the score.
The A's broke on top for good in the second when Charlie Lau tripled to lead off
the inning and scored on Dick Green's sacrifice fly.
Kansas City began to pile it on in the third, with two more runs. Nelson
Mathews led off with a single and, one out later, took third when right fielder
Roman Mejias kicked Colavito's single for an error--the first of four Red Sox
miscues in the game. Jim Gentile's ground out to short scored Matthews and
Colavito then came home on George Alusik's single.
Two more unearned runs scored for the Athletics in the fourth, the first when
Wayne Causey reached on Frank Malzone's boot, scoring Green in the process, and
the second when Causey raced home on Mathews' double.
Colavito put Kansas City ahead 7-1 in the fifth on his leadoff home run and
belted another roundtripper in the seventh, this one with Ed Charles aboard
after reaching on first baseman Dick Stuart's error. Colavito capped the
A's scoring in the ninth when he tripled with two outs and came home on Manny
Jimenez's single.
The Red Sox knocked out Drabowsky in the sixth with a pair of unearned runs on
Bob Tillman's single and scored three more total over the next two innings, but
it wasn't nearly enough.
Colavito kept up his exploits in the nightcap with RBI singles in the first and
fourth, two more singles in the third and ninth, and a walk in the fifth.
This game was over almost as soon as it started, as the A's scored two runs in
each of the first three innings. Red Sox starter Ed Connolly didn't make
it out of the third inning and was charged with six runs. Kansas City
stater Diego Segui allowed only a single run--unearned--in 7 2/3 innings and
improved to 4-1.
After hitting into a fielder's choice in his first plate appearance in the
opener, Colavito reached base safely nine consecutive times. The
streak--which is still active and will be on the line when the A's host the
White Sox tomorrow at Municipal Stadium--is tied for the longest in the major
leagues thus far this year. Joe Pepitone of the New York Yankees reached
base safely nine consecutive times on May 16 and 17.
