MALONEY LOSES PERFECTO, NO-NO AND SHUTOUT IN 9TH
Fans 13 Cubs in Reds Blowout 'W'
CINCINNATI, May 23 (AP) - Jim Maloney took a perfect game into the ninth inning,
only to lose it, the no-hitter and the shutout before closing out a 13-1 Reds
victory over the Chicago Cubs at Crosley Field. Maloney also struck out 13
batters in one of the most dominant pitching performances in the major leagues
this year before seeming to tire a bit in the final frame.
During a stretch that began in the second inning and ran through the sixth,
Maloney struck out 11 of 16 Chicago batters. The 13 strikeout performance
matches the high watermark for the season; Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles
Dodgers also struck out 13 batters, in a May 14 win over the Cubs.
The ninth inning was bittersweet for Maloney. He retired Billy Cowan on
strikes--his 12th strikeout of the contest--to open the inning. But he
fell behind pinch hitter Merritt Ranew 3-0 before eventually walking him on
seven pitches, losing the perfect game in the process. The no-hitter was
still intact, however, and Maloney came back to strike out pinch hitter Don
Landrum on a 3-2 pitch. With one out left to go, he went to 3-2 on his
third consecutive hitter before walking Jimmy Stewart. Lou Brock came to
the plate and dropped a 2-2 Maloney fastball into right-center field, ending the
no-hit bid and scoring Ranew, extinguishing the shutout as well. Billy
Williams was retired on a soft line drive to second baseman Pete Rose to end the
game, but despite an outstanding performance Maloney was left with thoughts of
what might have been.
His Reds teammates took away all the pressure by pouring runs across the plate
much earlier in the game. Cincinnati took a 1-0 lead in the first inning
on Deron Johnson's sacrifice fly and made it 3-0 in the fourth, on Johnson's
solo home run and a Scott Boros sacrifice fly. The Reds broke the game
open with three more runs in the fifth. Frank Robinson got the inning
started with a run-scoring double and Leo Cardenas capped it with a two-run
single. Cincinnati then put the pedal down with five unearned runs in the
sixth. Stewart's two-out error opened the door and the Reds ran through it
in the form of RBI singles off the bats of Johnson, Robinson and Boros and a
two-run base hit courtesy of Cardenas. Two more runs in the seventh closed
the Cincinnati scoring as Vada Pinson drove home a run with a single and Johnson
closed his big day at the plate--3-for-3, including a home run, three runs
scored and four driven in--with a sacrifice fly.
The victory was the fourth straight for the Reds while the Cubs fell for the
fifth consecutive time.
