C. SMITH'S SLAM IN 9TH BEATS KOUFAX
Fisher, Bearnarth Combine to 1-Hit Dodgers
LOS ANGELES, May 21 (AP) - Charley Smith hit a two-out grand slam off Sandy
Koufax in the top of the ninth inning, turning a potential Mets loss into a 4-1
victory at Dodger Stadium. The long ball made a winner out of Mets
reliever Larry Bearnarth, who combined with starter Jack Fisher to one-hit Los
Angeles over nine innings.
The Dodgers scored their only run in the bottom of the first off Fisher.
Jim Gilliam drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a Tommy Davis grounder to
short and then scored when Ron Fairly doubled to the wall in left-center
field. Little did anyone know that the Fairly two-bagger would be the only
Dodgers safety of the contest.
Koufax retired the first 11 batters he faced, before walking Ron Hunt with two
outs in the top of the fourth. He took a no-hitter into the sixth, but
Chris Cannizzaro broke that up with a seeing eye single through the left side of
the infield.
Fisher, meanwhile, was cruising through the Los Angeles order. After the
Fairly double, he retired nine straight Dodgers. With two outs in the
bottom of the fourth, Frank Howard reached when Maury Wills booted his grounder
for an error. Fisher then set down the next 10 Mets batters in order
before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the seventh. In
all, Fisher worked seven innings and allowed one hit and one walk.
After they broke up the no-hitter, the Mets had baserunners off Koufax in every
inning. Rod Kanehl led off the seventh with a single, but was eventually
erased in a double play. Smith singled with one out in the eighth, moved
to second on a weak grounder to second baseman Dick Tracewski and then took
third when when Jim Gilliam kicked Cannizzaro's ground ball for an error.
But Koufax retired pinch hitter Hawk Taylor on a fly to left, preserving the
Dodgers' 1-0 lead.
Bearnarth came on in relief for New York in the bottom of the eighth and set the
Dodgers down in order.
In the top of the ninth, Kanehl singled with one out and moved to second on a
wild pitch. When Koufax walked Hunt for the second time in the game, the
Mets had runners at first and second. Koufax got ahead of Joe Christopher
0-2 but then hit him with a pitch to fill the bases. Jim Hickman fanned
for the second out--Koufax's 10th strikeout of the contest--and it appeared that
he would preserve the shutout. But Smith took a 2-1 fastball into the left
field pavilion, stunning the 25,000-plus in attendance and giving the Mets a 4-1
lead.
Bearnarth retired the Dodgers 1-2-3 again in the ninth--Mets pitchers retired
the final 16 batters they faced collectively and didn't allow a Los Angeles
hitter to reach base safely after the first inning.
