DRYSDALE FIRES 4TH SHUTOUT OF SEASON
Dodgers Right-Hander is 1st to 7 Wins

LOS ANGELES, May 18 (AP) - Don Drysdale's early season claim as the National League's Cy Young Award Winner continues.  The Dodgers right-hander tossed a complete game, four-hit shutout in a 4-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.  It was Drysdale's sixth consecutive win and league leading fourth shutout and seventh complete game of the season and lowered his earned run average to a microscopic 1.37.

Los Angeles pushed across the only run they would need in the second inning.  Ron Fairly led the frame off with a walk and advanced to third on Frank Howard's opposite field single.  Johnny Roseboro's fly to center was too shallow to score Fairly, and Johnny Werhas followed with a walk off Pirates starter Steve Blass to fill the bases.  Blass then uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Fairly and giving the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.  Blass was able to avoid any additional damage in the inning.

The Dodgers then broke the game open in the fifth.  Drysdale singled with one out and, after Willie Davis flied to left for the second out, advanced to second base on Jim Gilliam's single.  Tommy Davis then belted a Blass fastball down the left field line, into the seats for a three-run home run and a 4-0 Los Angeles lead.

Pittsburgh never seriously threatened to score in the game, advancing only one runner past second base.  At one point, Drysdale retired 17 of 18 batters.

Drysdale remains undefeated on the season at 7-0.  His last start without a victory came on April 23 when he threw 9 1/3 innings in a no-decision at Milwaukee.
