"BABY BULL" PACES GIANTS' ROUT OF METS IN DH

Fisher Earns N.Y. Split in Nightcap
SAN FRANCISCO, May 17 (AP) - Orlando Cepeda was in and out of the lineup due to
a variety of injuries over most of the first month of the season, but he's
completely healthy now and the Giants are reaping the benefits. Cepeda
went 5-for-5 with a pair of home runs, a double and seven runs batted in as the
Giants pounded the New York Mets, 11-4, in the first game of a doubleheader at
Candlestick Park. Cepeda became the first player in the major leagues this
season to drive in more than five runs in a single game.
The Mets earned a split, with a 4-2 victory in the nightcap behind Jack Fisher's
complete game effort.
In the opener, the Giants seized control in the very first inning. With
two outs, Willie McCovey singled and Willie Mays followed by drawing a walk from
Mets starter Al Jackson. Cepeda then doubled to the right-center field
gap, driving home both runners for a 2-0 San Francisco lead. Jim Davenport
followed with a single, driving in Cepeda to cap the three-run inning.
The Mets got a run back in the third when Jackson hit a solo home run but the
Giants responded in the bottom half of the inning when Cepeda singled home Mays
to put the Giants on top 4-1.
New York kept the pressure on with single runs in the fourth and fifth on Roy
McMillan's sacrifice fly and Rod Kanehl's RBI single, cutting the San Francisco
lead to 4-3.
But the Giants began to regain firm control of the contest in the fifth.
Cepeda hit the first of his two home runs with a solo shot, upping the Giants'
lead to 5-3 and knocking Jackson out of the game. San Francisco really
broke the game open in the sixth. Chuck Hiller drew a leadoff walk off
reliever Bill Wakefield. Jim Ray Hart flied out, but Jesus Alou singled to
center and when Joe Christopher overran the ball, Hiller scored all the way from
first base, with Alou advancing to second. McCovey walked and Mays flied
to center for the second out. But Cepeda belted his second home run of the
game, far over the left field fence, to put the Giants ahead, 9-3.
The Mets picked up a run in the seventh when Christopher was hit by a pitch with
the bases loaded.
But the Giants weren't done, scoring two more runs in the eighth inning.
Mays' triple drove home the first run and Cepeda followed with an infield
single, scoring Mays for his seventh run batted in and capping the scoring at
11-4.
The Mets rebounded nicely in the nightcap. Jack Fisher tossed a complete
game, allowing two runs on six hits. New York took the lead in the fourth
and never looked back on Christopher's bases loaded, bases clearing
double.
The Giants got a run in the sixth on Matty Alou's sacrifice fly but the Mets
countered in the top of the ninth on Jim Hickman's RBI single. San
Francisco did pick up a consolation run on Harvey Kuenn's two-out RBI pinch
single in the bottom of the ninth, but Fisher stiffened and retired Mays on a
fly to center to end the game.
