BUNKER FIRES 1-HITTER AS O'S SHUTOUT HALOS
Loses No-Hit Bid in 8th
BALTIMORE, May 15 (AP) - Wally Bunker tossed a complete game one-hit shutout and
the Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles Angels, 3-0, in the opening game of a
doubleheader at Memorial Stadium. It was the third complete game in as
many starts for the right-hander who took a no-hitter into the eighth inning
before surrendering a single to Ed Kirkpatrick with one out.
The Orioles pushed two runs across in the fourth inning. Norm Seibern drew
a one-out walk and moved to second on Brooks Robinson's opposite field
double. Angels starter Dean Chance appeared to be pitching around Boog
Powell, but the burly first baseman tapped a low outside pitch to the right
side. The swinging bunt went for an infield hit, scoring Siebern with the
game's first run and moving Robinson to third. Willie Kirkland followed
with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Robinson to put Baltimore on top, 2-0.
The Orioles added an insurance run off reliever Bob Diluba in the eighth, when,
with one out, Rocky Johnson reached on an an infield single, moved to
third one out later on Robinson's base hit and then scored on a single off the
bat of Joe Gaines, to make it 3-0.
Bunker retired the first nine batters he faced, then walked Albie Pearson to
lead off the fourth inning. Bunker then retired another 10 Los Angeles
hitters in a row before walking Jim Fregosi with one out in the seventh.
Kirkpatrick's eighth inning single was the only hit and through eight frames,
Bunker had allowed only three batters to reach base safely.
Bunker took a 3-0 lead into the ninth inning and, after retiring Pearson on a
fly ball to center field, ran into trouble. He walked Billy Moran and
Fregosi, bringing the tying run to the plate with runners at first and
second. With left-hander Harvey Haddix warming up in the bullpen, Orioles
manager Hank Bauer elected to stay with Bunker and he retired Lee Thomas and Bob
Rodgers on ground balls to short to preserve the shutout.
It was the second one-hitter in the American League thus far this
season. The Orioles were the victims of a one-hit complete game effort by
Hank Aguirre on May 9.
