BUCS MANAGE JUST 1 HIT, STILL BEAT DODGERS
Friend Throws Shutout
LOS ANGELES, May 15 (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates managed just one hit--Willie
Stargell's second inning double--but still managed to defeat the Los Angeles
Dodgers, 1-0. Bob Friend tossed a six-hit complete game shutout for
Pittsburgh, to even his record at 3-3. It was Friend's second shutout of
the season and his fourth complete game.
Phil Ortega (2-2) was the hard luck loser. He allowed only one hit and one
walk over eight innings. Bob Miller threw a perfect ninth for the Dodgers.
The game's only run came in the top of the second inning. Stargell looped
an opposite field double, just inside the left field foul line, to lead off the
frame. Gene Freese grounded to second, advancing Stargell to third.
Dodgers manager Walt Alston, sensing the likelihood of a low-scoring contest,
brought the infield in, but Donn Clendenon lifted a fly ball to right
field. Frank Howard made the catch, but Stargell tagged and scored without
a play.
That was roughly the sum total of the Pittsburgh offense. Gene Alley drew
a two-out walk in the third inning, but never moved past first base. The
only other Pirates baserunner came in the sixth when Alley reached on second
baseman Dick Tracewski's one-out error. He made it as far as second base,
following Bill Virdon's sacrifice, but was stranded there. Ortega and
Miller retired the final 11 batters they faced in order.
The Dodgers did have some scoring opportunities. In the seventh inning,
Jim Gilliam singled to lead off the inning and Tommy Davis followed with
Friend's only free pass of the game. Ron Fairly bunted the runners to
second and third with one out. But, on a 3-2 pitch, Friend struck out
Howard swinging and retired Johnny Roseboro on a fly ball to center to end the
threat.
In the bottom of the ninth, Maury Wills led off with a base hit. Gilliam
attempted to sacrifice Wills to second but failed and eventually struck
out. Wills was then thrown out trying to steal second by Pirates catcher
Jim Pagliaroni, which turned out to be a critical play when Tommy Davis followed
with a base hit. Friend eventually induced Fairly to ground to Bill
Mazeroski to end the game.
It was the second time this year that Pittsburgh had won a game while
accumulating two hits or less. The Pirates beat the Milwaukee Braves, 1-0,
despite accruing only two hits, in the first game of a doubleheader on May 10.
