Bunning-Broglio Duel Runs Through 10

PHILADELPHIA, May 14 (AP) - Cookie Rojas hit a two-run game-winning home run with two outs in the bottom of the 13th inning to lead the Philadelphia Phillies past the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-1, at Connie Mack Stadium.  The game featured a classic pitching duel between Jim Bunning of the Phillies and Ernie Broglio of the Cardinals.  Both pitchers went 10 innings and allowed one run, but did not figure in the decision.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the eighth inning when Tony Taylor touched Broglio for a one-out solo home run to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead.  It was one of only three hits allowed by Broglio, who also struck out eight batters.

Bunning tried to finish the complete game shutout in the ninth, but was let down by his defense.  Curt Flood was retired for the first out of the inning but Doug Clemens whistled a triple to right-center field.  Bunning struck out Dick Groat for the second out and then induced Bill White to ground to short for what should have been the final out.  But shortstop Ruben Amaro, who had entered the game after starter Bobby Wine was lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh, misplayed the ground ball for an error, allowing Clemens to score the tying run.

Broglio retired the Phillies in order in the bottom of the ninth and Bunning returned to throw the top of the tenth, and set the Cardinals down easily.  Broglio then took care of Philadelphia--again in order--in the bottom half of the inning.  The two starting pitchers allowed only seven hits between them while striking out 15.  Broglio did issue three walks and hit a batter but Bunning was clean in that regard.

The Cardinals had a scoring opportunity in the top of the 13th, when Julian Javier led off with a single off Phillies reliever Jack Baldschun.  He was sacrificed to second by Carl Warwick, but Flood and Clemens both grounded out.

Roger Craig came on in relief for St. Louis in the bottom of the 13th and immediately surrendered a double to Tony Taylor that hit the left field wall on the fly.  Richie Allen tried to sacrifice Taylor to third but popped up the bunt attempt for the first out.  Callison grounded out to short for the second out, bringing Rojas--who had entered the game as a defensive replacement in the ninth--to the plate.  Craig's first pitch was a fastball and Rojas didn't miss it, driving it well into the lower grandstand in left field for the game-winning blow.
