KOUFAX, DRYSDALE CONTINUE LA's RUN ATOP NL
Dodgers Starters Key Sweep of Cubs
CHICAGO, May 14 (AP) - Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale may be the two best
pitchers in the National League and, fortunately for the Los Angeles Dodgers,
they play for the same team. Koufax struck out 13 batters and fired a
three-hit complete game shutout in a 6-0 victory in the opening game of a
doubleheader at Wrigley Field. Drysdale became baseball's first six-game
winner in the nightcap as the Dodgers completed the sweep with an 8-3 win over
the Chicago Cubs. The pair of wins moved the Dodgers two games clear of
the second place St. Louis Cardinals. The Cubs, who had been within 1/2
game of first place before play started, now find themselves in a third place
tie with San Francisco and Milwaukee, 2 1/2 games back.
In the opener, Koufax (3-2) fired his second straight shutout and extended his
personal scoreless innings pitched streak to 25 1/3; that's the longest such
streak in the major leagues this season. The left-hander last allowed a
run in the second inning of a game against the Cubs on May 4. It was the
third shutout on the season for Koufax, tying him for the major league lead
with...Drysdale. It was the fifth complete game for Koufax in six starts
this season, placing him second in the National League behind Juan Marichal of
the Giants. The 13 strikeouts is the most recorded by a big league pitcher
in a single game thus far this season.
The opener was scoreless until the Dodgers dented home plate in the third with
the game's star scoring what would prove to be the winning run. Koufax
singled off Chicago starter Dick Ellsworth (5-1) with one out and moved to third
on Maury Wills' single to right. Jim Gilliam followed with a sacrifice fly
to center and the Dodgers had a lead they wouldn't surrender.
They padded that advantage in the fourth. Frank Howard led off the inning
with a walk and advanced to third one out later when Ellsworth booted Wes
Parker's tapper back to the hill for an error, leaving runners on the
corners. Doug Camilli's fielder's choice grounder forced Parker at second,
but Howard scored the second run of the game. Dick Tracewski then
deposited an Ellsworth pitch halfway up the left-center field bleachers to give
Los Angeles a 4-0 lead.
The Dodgers added another unearned run in the fifth when a Ron Santo error
preceded Howard's two-out double and Los Angeles capped the scoring in the ninth
when Tracewski led off with a double and eventually scored on Wills' sacrifice
fly.
Koufax, meanwhile, was overpowering the Cubs, retiring the final 10 batters he
faced and striking out four batters in a row at one point.
In the nightcap, the Dodgers broke out on top with three runs off Fred Norman in
the very first inning. Wills led off with a triple and Parker followed
with a home run into the center field bleachers for a 2-0 lead. Tommy
Davis then went deep himself, putting the Dodgers ahead 3-0.
Drysdale surrendered a first inning run to the Cubs when Ron Santo's two-out
single plated Lou Brock, but that was as close as Chicago would come.
The Dodgers blew the game open in the third inning. Wills singled, but was
thrown out trying to steal second. Parker followed with a single but Davis
flied to right for the second out. Then the wheels came off for
Norman. A wild pitch advanced Parker to second, which led to an
intentional walk to Howard. Ken McMullen followed with the third Los
Angeles home run of the day, putting the Dodgers on top 6-1. Johnny Werhas
then singled and he moved to third on Camilli's base hit. Tracewski
singled Werhas home and Drysdale followed with a walk and Norman was finally
removed from the game in favor of Lindy McDaniel, who retired Wills on a
comebacker. The score was 7-1 and the contest was effectively over.
The Dodgers added an unearned tack-on run in the eighth when Santo booted
Tracewski's grounder and he later scored on a Wills single.
After the first inning, Drysdale shut the Cubs out through the seventh, but
stumbled a bit in the eighth. With one out, Billy Williams doubled and
Santo launched a home run just inside the left field foul pole that landed on
Waveland Avenue. Ron Perranoski replaced Dyrsdale and mopped up with a
scoreless 1 2/3 innings.
As a staff, the Dodgers have 11 complete games (nine by Koufax and Drysdale) and
eight shutouts (six by Koufax and Drysdale); both marks top the National
League. Koufax and Drysdale have combined for an earned run average of
1.46 in 14 combined starts. The rest of the Dodgers' staff stands at 3.46.
