COLTS DROP 10TH STRAIGHT GAME
Shutout By Hendley and Giants
HOUSTON, May 13 (AP) - Bob Hendley tossed a five-hit complete game shutout
and the San Francisco Giants sent the Houston Colt .45's to their 10th straight
loss, 3-0, at Colt Stadium. It was the 16th loss in the last 17 games for
the Colt .45's, who have won only once since April 26. Houston has been
shutout five times during the 17-game stretch and seven times in 29 games
overall thus far this season.
Remarkably, the active 10-game losing streak is only the second longest in the
National League. The New York Mets have lost 11 consecutive games after
falling to the Milwaukee Braves, 7-3.
The game was scoreless until the third inning, when the Giants seized the
lead. Hendley started the rally with a one-out single off Houston starter
Ken Johnson (1-6). Jesus Alou followed by slapping a single through the
right side of the infield, leaving runners at first and second. Matty Alou
rolled into a 3-6 fielder's choice, putting runners at first and third with two
outs but Willie Mays came through by lacing a double past third baseman Bob
Aspromonte into the the left field corner, scoring both runners and putting the
Giants on top, 2-0.
The score remained 2-0 until the seventh when San Francisco added an insurance
run. Del Crandall led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by
Hendley. Jesus Alou flied out but Matty Alou dropped a single into left,
scoring Crandall. Alou was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a
double to end the inning, but the damage had been done.
The Colt .45's seemed almost helpless against Hendley (3-2), who struck out nine
without walking anyone. Houston never advanced a runner past second base
en route to being shutout for the second time in the series. A trio of
Giants pitchers whitewashed the Colt .45's two days ago in the series opener.
On the season, Houston has scored a league-worst 72 runs--roughly 2 1/2 runs per
game--while hitting only .200 as a team.
