METS 'L' STREAK HITS 10 GAMES
Fischer Twirls Shutout
NEW YORK, May 12 (AP) - Hank Fischer tossed a five-hit complete game shutout and
the Milwaukee Braves extended the New York Mets' losing streak to 10 games with
a 4-0 win at Shea Stadium. The Mets are running one loss ahead of the
Houston Colt .45's who dropped their ninth straight game when they fell at the
hands of the San Francisco Giants. New York is a major league worst 5-20
on the season.
Fischer improved his record to 4-0 with his first shutout and third complete
game of the campaign to date.
Milwaukee took the lead for good in the third inning. Felipe Alou led off
the frame with a single and, one out later, took third on Henry Aaron's
double. Joe Torre then grounded sharply off the leg of Mets starter Al
Jackson for an infield hit, scoring Alou with the game's first run.
Further damage was avoided when Gene Oliver grounded into an inning-ending
double play.
Fischer helped his own cause with an RBI ground out in the fourth to extend the
lead to 2-0 and Torre and Oliver accounted for a third run in the fifth inning
with a two-out double and single respectively. The Braves capped the
scoring in the seventh with an unearned run. Torre reached on a two-base
error by Mets catcher Hawk Taylor and eventually scored on reliever Jay
Hinsley's wild pitch.
Fischer, who currently stands among the National League leaders in wins and
earned run average, was in complete command throughout. He never allowed a
New York runner past second base and allowed more than one baserunner in an
inning only once.
With the victory, the Braves pulled to within 1 1/2 games of the first place Los
Angeles Dodgers in the crowded first division of the National League. The
loss left the Mets in sole possession of the NL basement, 1/2 game behind ninth
place Houston.
