DRYSDALE FIRES 3RD SHUTOUT OF SEASON
Dodgers Right-Hander Tosses 4th Straight Shutout
SAN FRANCISCO, May 10 (AP) - Don Drysdale tossed his fourth consecutive complete
game and his league leading third shutout of the season, improving to 5-0 in the
process, as the Los Angeles Dodgers pushed past the San Francisco Giants, 3-0,
at Candlestick Park. Drysdale held the Giants to just five hits and one
walk while fanning seven, though he did uncork three wild pitches. The
four consecutive complete games for the Los Angeles right-hander have all been
victories.
For four innings, Giants starter Jack Sanford matched Drysdale, as the game
remained scoreless into the fifth. But in the top of the fifth with one
out, Willie Davis took a Sanford pitch over the right field fence for his fifth
home run of the season.
The Dodgers added an insurance run in the eighth, with some help from the San
Francisco defense. Maury Wills' led off with a chopper to first that was
booted by Willie McCovey. He promptly stole second base and moved to third
on Jim Gilliam's sacrifice. Ron Herbel replaced Sanford but Tommy Davis
lifted a fly ball to left field that was deep enough to score Wills with Los
Angeles' second run.
The Dodgers capped the scoring in the ninth courtesy of another Giants'
error. Frank Howard drew a leadoff walk from new reliever Gaylord
Perry. He was replaced by pinch runner Lee Walls, who advanced to second
on Johnny Roseboro's sacrifice bunt. Willie Davis singled to center, with
Walls stopping at third. With the infield in, Dick Tracewski grounded to
third, but Jim Ray Hart let the ball go right through his legs for an error,
scoring Walls with the third Dodgers' run of the game.
The Giants' best scoring opportunity came in the fourth when Willie Mays led off
with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on McCovey's ground out to
second. But Tom Haller tapped one back to the mound for the second out,
forcing Mays to hold at third, and Chuck Hiller grounded to third to extinguish
the threat. That was the only occasion when the Giants had a runner reach
scoring position with less than two outs.
