PURKEY FIRES 2-HITTER, REDS EXTEND 'W' STREAK TO 4
Robinson Homers, Drives in All 3 Reds Runs
PHILADELPHIA, May 9 (AP) - The Reds got off to a sluggish start this year but
appear to have found their footing recently. Bob Purkey tossed a complete
game two-hitter and Frank Robinson belted a home run and drove in all of his
club's runs in Cincinnati's 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at Connie
Mack Stadium. The Reds have now won four straight games and eight of their
last 10 and have pulled within 2 1/2 games of first place in the National
League.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when the Reds took a lead
they would never relinquish. Chico Ruiz led off with a single, but
Phillies starter Jim Bunning struck out Vada Pinson and Gordy Coleman.
Robinson, however, crushed a 3-2 fastball into the left field grandstand for his
second home run of the year to put Cincinnati on top, 2-0.
Purkey, meanwhile, was shutting Philadelphia down. He allowed a harmless
two-out first inning single to Johnny Callison and a base hit off the bat of
Bobby Wine leading off the second did no damage.
With the score still 2-0 in the seventh, the Phillies pulled to within a single
tally on an unearned run, without the benefit of a hit. Callison reached
on third baseman Chico Ruiz's error to open the inning and Tony Gonzalez drew
a free pass, putting runners on first and second with none out. Wes
Covington grounded into a fielder's choice, leaving runners at the corners with
one out. John Herrnstein's roller to second forced Covington for the
second out, but Callison scored to break the shutout.
The Reds reclaimed their two-run led in the top of the eighth. Pinson
singled with one out and Coleman's soft line drive back to the mound was caught
in the air by Bunning for the second out of the inning. But Robinson came
through with the big hit again, lacing a double into the gap in left-center
field, scoring Pinson from first base.
Purkey retired the Phillies in order in each of the last two innings, finishing
with a complete game two-hitter, striking out seven while walking two.
Bunning recovered from consecutive poor outings to pitch effectively for eight
innings before being lifted in favor of a pinch hitter, but still fell to 1-3 on
the season.
