KOUFAX DOMINATES GIANTS
Fans 11 in 2-Hit Shutout
SAN FRANCISCO, May 9 (AP) - Sandy Koufax fired a complete game two-hitter en
route to shutting out the San Francisco Giants, 4-0, at Candlestick Park.
The victory helped preserve the Los Angeles Dodgers' 1 1/2 game lead atop the
National League. The 11-strikeout performance was the second straight game
in which Koufax reached double digits in punch outs. Koufax evened his
record at 2-2, while lowering his earned run average to 1.64. Both of the
left-hander's wins have been complete game shutouts; in five starts, Koufax has
received a total of 13 runs from his teammates.
With lack of run support a constant problem, Koufax took matters into his own
hands. While he struggled a bit with his control, walking four, hitting a
batter and unleashing a wild pitch, he was simply dominant. The only hits
allowed were singles--by Willie Mays in the second inning and by Jim Davenport
in the ninth; the sixth was the only frame in which he didn't strike out at
least one batter.
For five innings it appeared that Koufax's teammates would let him down again,
as they failed to score against Giants starter Bob Hendley. But they
finally broke through in the sixth. Maury Wills led off with a single and
moved to second one out later on Willie Davis' base hit. Tommy Davis
fanned for the second out but Frank Howard came through with a single to left,
scoring Wills with the first run of the game and chasing Willie Davis to
third. Ken McMullen's grounder to the hole was smothered by a diving Jose
Pagan but he had no play. The infield single drove home Davis with the
second run of the inning and moved Howard to second base. Johnny Roseboro
capped the inning's scoring and drove Hendley from the game in the process by
singling through the box, plating Howard and putting the Dodgers on top, 3-0.
Wills gave Los Angeles an insurance run by homering with one out in the seventh
to make it 4-0.
That was more than Koufax needed, as he retired 19 of the final 22 batters he
faced en route to his fourth complete game and second shutout. As a team,
the Dodgers have nine complete games and six shutouts in 24 starts.
