AGUIRRE FINDS FORM, 1-HITS O'S
6 Game Winning Streak Snapped; Only 28 Batters
Faced
DETROIT, May 9 (AP) - Hank Aguirre put on one of the season's most dominating
pitching performance to date, facing only 28 batters in a one-hit complete game
Detroit victory over Baltimore at Tiger Stadium. Aguirre didn't walk a
batter and allowed only Joe Gaines' solo home run in the top of the second
inning, while striking out nine Orioles.
The Gaines home run briefly gave Baltimore the lead, but it didn't last
long. In the bottom of the second, Detroit scored three times. Don
Demeter led off with a single, advanced to second on a ground out and then
scored on Bill Freehan's opposite field home run. Don Wert walked and then
scored one out later on Dick McAuliffe's double.
The Tigers blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth, chasing Orioles
starter Chuck Estrada in the process. Wert singled with one out and
Estrada walked Aguirre. McAuliffe then homered into the lower stands in
right field, scoring three more runs and giving Detroit a 6-1 lead. Jerry
Lumpe followed with a triple and that spelled the end of Estrada's day. He
was replaced by Wes Stock who managed to get out of the inning without any
further damage.
Detroit tacked on another run in the fifth when Demeter led off the frame with
his third home run of the season to cap the scoring.
Aguirre, meanwhile, was on cruise control. The Gaines home run came after
the first five Baltimore batters had been retired in order and Aguirre then set
down the final 22 batters in the game, including one stretch between the third
and sixth innings when he fanned seven of ten batters.
The loss ended the Orioles' winning streak at six games.
The performance by Aguirre was a bounce back from a pair of consecutive poor
starts that saw him last a total of only five innings, during which time he
surrendered 11 runs. The left-hander lost both games, but evened his
record at 2-2 with this gem--the first one-hitter in the American League thus
far this year.
