NATS' TURN IT AROUND; COMPLETE 3-GAME SWEEP OF YANKS
Stenhouse Shutout, 10-Run 2nd Fuel Blowout Finale
WASHINGTON, May 7 (AP) - Just a few days ago, the Washington Senators salvaged
the final game of a four-game series at Yankee Stadium by eking out a 4-3
victory over New York in the second game of a Sunday doubleheader. The
Yankees had tormented the Senators by shutting them out over the prior three
games of the set, dropping Washington to a major league worst 4-15 record.
With the Yankees heading to D.C. Stadium for a three-game series, expectations
were for more of the same. The Senators would have none of it.
Dave Stenhouse tossed a four-hit shutout and the Senators sent 15 batters to the
plate in a 10-run second inning, en route to a 10-0 whitewashing of the
Yankees. It was an emphatic punctuation to the series which saw the
Senators' bats awaken to key Washington's three-game sweep of New York.
The Senators outscored the Yankees 23-7 over the three games, including
yesterday's doubleheader sweep by Washington, 6-5 and 7-2. What made the
series finale even sweeter for Senators fans was that New York's starting
pitcher, Al Downing, had fired a no-hitter against Washington just four days
prior.
This game started out unremarkably enough. The Yankees had baserunners in
each of the first two innings that were erased by double play grounders.
In the bottom of the second, however, the Senators emphatically took control of
the game, once and for all. Don Lock led off the inning by tripling to
right-center field. Don Leppert flied to center field for the first out;
Lock did not test Mickey Mantle's arm. But Ken Hunt looped a hit to center
field. Lock scored easily and when Mantle overran the ball, Leppert took
second on the error. Downing then walked John Kennedy to put runners at
first and second. Stenhouse followed by dropping a sacrifice bunt down
that moved the runners to second and third with two outs. That's when the
parade began. Don Blasingame singled to center, scoring both runners to
give Washington a 3-0 lead. Downing's first pitch to Eddie Brinkman was
wild, advancing Blasingame to second. Brinkman then singled through the
box, scoring Blasingame with the fourth run of the inning. Downing walked
Chuck Hinton to put runners at first and second and Moose Skowron followed with
a single through the right side of the infield, scoring Brinkman and moving
Hinton to second. It was now 5-0. Lock then came up for the second
time in the frame and promptly put the game on ice, belting his third home run
of the year to put the Senators on top 8-0. That was it for Downing, who
was replaced by Bud Daley, but Washington wasn't done. Leppert singled to
center and Hunt followed with a triple to just about the same spot Lock had
tripled to start the inning. Leppert scored to make it 9-0. Kennedy
then singled to left, scoring Hunt with the tenth run of the inning.
Stenhouse was hit by a pitch before Blasingame finally grounded to second to end
the inning. Following Stenhouse's sacrifice, nine straight Senators had
reached base safely.
The game was essentially over, and both teams played as though they knew
it. Stenhouse (1-2) simply cruised through the Yankees lineup, retiring 18
of 19 batters at one point and allowing only one runner to reach second
base. The Senators managed only three baserunners themselves after the
second inning, though it hardly mattered. The final seven innings were
played in 80 minutes.
