11-RUN 1ST PACES CHISOX IN SWEEP OF HALOS
McBride Pummeled, Suffers Loss
CHICAGO, May 3 (AP) - The Chicago White Sox exploded for 11 first inning runs,
knocking the American League's April Pitcher of the Month out, en route to a
12-7 victory over the Los Angeles Angels in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Comiskey
Park. The White Sox went on to win the nightcap as well, 6-4, to complete
the sweep. Game one starter Ken McBride of the Angels entered the contest
4-0 on the season but didn't make it out of the first inning and suffered his
initial defeat of the year. The White Sox now have the two biggest innings
of the season in either league, having scored eight runs in the seventh inning
of a 10-3 victory over Boston on April 25.
After Chicago's Juan Pizarro (1-1) set down the Angels in the top of the first,
the White Sox teed off on McBride. Mike Hershberger was hit with a pitch
to start things off and was singled to second by Don Buford. Floyd
Robinson then drew a free pass to fill the bases. Ron Hansen followed with
a single up the middle, scoring Hershberger and Buford to give the White Sox a
2-0 lead, leaving runners at first and second. Earl Cunningham drew
McBride's second walk of the inning, loading the bases for the second
time. McBride finally got the first out of the inning when Dave Nicholson
flied to the edge of the warning track in left, scoring Robinson with the third
Chicago run and advancing Hansen to third. Al Weis grounded out to second,
scoring Hansen to make it 4-0 and moving Cunningham to third. The final
out of the inning was to prove elusive for McBride, who walked Cam Carreon.
Pizarro then added insult to injury by grounding a single into left field,
filling the bases for the third time in the first inning. With a
doubleheader on tap, the Angels hoped to squeeze a few innings out of McBride,
but it wasn't to be. Hershberger singled to left scoring Cunningham and
Carreon and when left fielder Ed Kirkpatrick's throw ended up at the backstop
for an error, Pizarro and Hershberger moved to third and second
respectively. That was it for McBride, who had worked the shortest stint
by a major league starter to date this season, and was replaced on the mound by
Art Fowler. The fireworks continued, however. Buford walked to load
the bases yet again and Robinson singled home two more runs to put the White Sox
ahead, 8-0. Hansen then administered the coup de grace, with a three-run
homer into the lower grandstand, just inside the left field foul pole.
That capped the 11-run inning and Fowler finally recorded the third out by
inducing Cunningham to pop to third.
That was essentially the game. The Angels scraped and clawed and
eventually scored seven runs, but never moved any closer than five runs
behind. In fact, the Chicago offense all but shut down after the first
inning; the White Sox managed only two hits the rest of the way.
In the nightcap, the Angels pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the first
on a double by Lee Thomas and a ground out off the bat of Tom Satriano.
The White Sox pushed back, scoring a run in the fourth on Dave Nicholson's
single and tying the game in the sixth on Tom McCraw's two-out RBI double.
The White Sox then took the lead for good in the seventh. Weis reached on
Joe Koppe's error to start the inning and moved to second on J.C. Martin's
sacrifice. Pitcher John Buzhardt hit for himself and singled Weis to third
and Hershberger's weak ground ball to short led to an out at first but scored
Weis with the go-ahead run. The White Sox weren't done. Buford
singled Buzhardt to third and Floyd Robinson singled him home to make it
4-2. Hansen followed with a bases clearing double and the lead was 6-2.
The insurance runs were to prove critical as the Angels scored twice on Jim
Fregosi's pinch hit home run in the eighth, but Hoyt Wilhelm came on and retired
all five batters he faced to close out the game.
