DRYSDALE PITCHES DODGERS TO 6TH STRAIGHT VICTORY
Extends Scorless Streak to 18.2 IP With CG Shutout of Giants

LOS ANGELES, May 1 (AP) - The Los Angeles Dodgers extended their early season winning streak to six consecutive games on the strength of a four-hit complete shutout by Don Drysdale, defeating the San Francisco Giants 1-0.  Drysdale now has an active scoreless streak of 18 2/3 innings and is 3-0 on the season with an earned run average of 1.44.  The game, which was scoreless until the eighth inning, had a tense, pennant race feel and was played before a crowd of 46,847 at Dodger Stadium, the largest non-opening day attendance for any major league game this season.  The Dodgers expect an even larger turnout for tomorrow's game.

Jack Sanford (2-1) of the Giants was the tough-luck loser, having held the Dodgers to just two hits through 7 2/3 innings of work and surrendering only a single unearned run.

The Giants had the game's first threat, putting runners at first and second with two outs in the second inning, but Drysdale fanned Jose Pagan to end the frame.

San Francisco had an even better opportunity in the fifth.  Tom Haller led off the inning by grounding a single to right and Jim Ray Hart followed by rolling a single between Maury Wills and Johnny Werhas into left field, giving the Giants runners at first and second with none out.  But Drysdale retired Pagan on a shallow fly to center and turned Sanford's sacrifice attempt into a force at third.  The big right-hander completed his extraction by inducing Jesus Alou to roll into an inning-ending fielder's choice.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, didn't have a runner past first base against Sanford until the seventh.  Willie Davis reached first on Hart's throwing error to open the inning and then stole second when Tommy Davis struck out on a 3-2 pitch.  Sanford went on to strike out Frank Howard and retire Ron Fairly on a ground ball to third.

The Dodgers finally broke the scoreless tie in the eighth, but needed a Giants miscue to do so.  Johnny Roseboro led off and hit a dribbler to first that Willie McCovey misplayed for a key error.  A botched hit-and-run played to the favor of the Dodgers when Johnny Werhas swung and missed but Roseboro was safe at second when catcher Haller had trouble getting a grip on the ball and made a weak throw to second.  Werhas eventually grounded to Chuck Hiller at second, with Roseboro advancing to third.  With the potential go-ahead run 90 feet from home plate, Dodgers manager Walter Alston called on Jim Gilliam, one of the most difficult batters to fan in the NL, to hit for Dick Tracewski.  The Giants brought the infield in but Gilliam squibbed a grounder through the right side, scoring Roseboro with the game's first and only run.  Drysdale sacrificed Gilliam to second and Maury Wills drew a walk.  With lefty swinging Willie Davis due, Giants manager Alvin Dark replaced Sanford--who allowed only two hits and walked one--with left-hander Billy O'Dell.  O'Dell got a ground ball from Davis, but Hart booted it for an error, prolonging the inning by loading the bases.  But O'Dell struck out Tommy Davis to end the threat.

Drysdale set down the Giants in order on three routine ground balls to finish off the shutout--the fifth of the year by Dodgers pitching in just 17 games.
