BENNETT STAYS HOT AS PHILS TOP REDS
Lefty Fans 11 in CG Shutout
CINCINNATI, Apr. 30 (AP) - Dennis Bennett became the major leagues' first
four-game winner, striking out 11 and scattering eight hits en route to a
complete game shutout in Philadelphia's 4-0 victory over Cincinnati at Crosley
Field. It was Bennett's third complete game in four starts and he lowered
his earned run average to 0.77. The Reds managed nine baserunners in the
game, but stranded all of them.
The Phillies took a lead they would never surrender in the top of the second
when Gus Triandos homered with the bases empty and one out off Reds starter Joe
Nuxhall. The score remained 1-0 until the seventh.
Cincinnati, meanwhile whiffed on an excellent scoring opportunity in the bottom
of the sixth. Pete Rose led off with a single and Chico Ruiz beat out a
bunt for a hit, putting runners at first and second with no outs. But
Bennett fanned Tommy Harper and Deron Johnson for the first two outs and then
retired Frank Robinson on a grounder to first to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Johnny Callison homered to center to give the
Phillies a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the frame, Leo Cardenas led off
with a base hit and, two outs later, pinch hitter Bobby Klaus doubled into the
left field corner, with Cardenas stopping at second. But Bennett escaped
trouble, retiring Rose on a grounder to short.
The Phiilies made it 3-0 in the top of the eighth when Tony Gonzalez singled off
reliever Al Worthington and scored on Danny Cater's double.
The Reds muffed their final good threat in the bottom of the eighth.
Harper singled with one out and Johnson drew Bennett's only walk of the game,
putting runners at first and second with only one out. But Robinson lined
to left and Cardenas struck out to end the inning.
Philadelphia put the icing on the cake in the ninth by adding an unearned
run. Tony Taylor and Callison hit back-to-back one-out singles off Jim
Dickson. Richie Allen then grounded to second, forcing Callison but the
return throw from Cardenas to first base was wild, sailing into the stands
allowing Taylor to trot home with the Phillies' fourth run.
Bennett struck out Johnny Edwards and Marty Keough in the ninth before retiring
pinch hitter Hal Smith on a ground ball to complete the shutout.
