DRYSDALE DOMINATES COLTS
Fires 3-Hit Shutout at Houston
HOUSTON, Apr. 27 (AP) - Don Drysdale resumed his early season dominance, tossing
a three-hit complete game shutout as the Los Angeles Dodgers whitewashed the
Houston Colt .45's, 3-0. It was the second time in four starts that
Drysdale had held the opposition scoreless; on April 15, the Dodgers
right-hander fired 10 scoreless innings, but wasn't involved in the decision
against St. Louis.
The Colt .45's had only one decent scoring chance in the entire game.
Eddie Kasko led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and Nellie Fox drew a
four-pitch walk, putting runners at first and second with none out. But
Jimmy Wynn's sacrifice attempt turned into a force out at third base and Walt
Bond bounced into a double play to third, extinguishing the threat.
Houston managed only three baserunners in the remainder of the game--one reached
on an error--and none of them made it past first base.
The Dodgers, meanwhile, scraped across a run in the fourth against Colt .45's
starter Hal Brown. Wally Moon led off the inning with a single and, with a
hit-and-run play on, Willie Davis singled to right, giving Los Angeles runners
at first and third. Frank Howard rolled into an around the horn double
play, but Moon scored giving the Dodgers the only run they would need.
Los Angeles did add some insurance in the seventh against reliever Dave Giusti.
Johnny Roseboro led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild
pitch. Johnny Werhas flied to left for the first out, but Dick Tracewski
singled to left. Roseboro scored on the play and Tracewski advanced to
second on the throw. Drysdale then helped himself by squirting a single
through the right side of the infield, driving in Tracewski and capping the
scoring at 3-0.
With a light docket of games--this was the only National League action on this
day--the Dodgers moved into a virtual tie for first place, just percentage
points behind Philadelphia.
Drysdale's sole problem in the early going had been his control. He had
issued 14 walks in his first three starts, covering 26 2/3 innings. In
this start, there was only one free pass--the fourth inning base on balls drawn
by Fox.
