CRAIG FIRES 10-INNNING CG 1-HITTER
White's HR Gives Cards Win
SAN FRANCISCO, Apr. 17 (AP) - Roger Craig tossed a complete game 1-hitter and
Bill White belted a two-run home run in the top of the 10th as the St. Louis
Cardinals squeezed past the San Francisco Giants, 2-0, at Candlestick
Park. Craig became the fifth starting pitcher in the major leagues to work
beyond the ninth inning this season to date, but is the first to throw an extra
inning complete game.
Billy O'Dell started for the Giants and matched Craig zero for zero on the
scoreboard but was lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth and was
not involved in the decision. Don Larsen replaced O'Dell, surrendered
White's home run and was charged with the loss.
St. Louis loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the first inning but
O'Dell fanned Carl Warwick to extinguish the threat.
The Giants picked up what would prove to be their only hit of the contest in the
bottom of the second on Duke Snider's leadoff single, but Tom Haller immediately
erased the baserunner by hitting into a 6-4-3 double play.
The Cardinals had two good scoring opportunities in the fourth and seventh
innings. In the former, Curt Flood led off with a walk and, one out later,
moved to second when Craig reached when San Francisco second baseman Chuck
Hiller kicked Craig's would-be double play grounder, leaving runners on first
and second with one out. But O'Dell got Julian Javier to tap one back to
the mound and the Giants turned it into an inning-ending double play.
In the seventh, Tim McCarver and Craig rapped out back-to-back singles to open
the inning, but O'Dell got Julian Javier on a fly to left, retired Dick Groat on
a foul pop and fanned White to end the frame.
The Cardinals finally broke through in the tenth against Larsen. Javier
flied to center but Groat singled and White crushed a fastball over the right
field fence to put St. Louis ahead.
Craig had been mowing down the Giants with startling ease. After Snider's
hit he retired seven in a row before Willie McCovey reached on third baseman Ken
Boyer's two-out fourth inning error. Craig then retired another seven
straight before walking Willie Mays to lead off the seventh. That was the
last San Francisco baserunner of the game. All told, four men reached base
for the Giants; two were erased on double plays and none made it as far as
second base.
Craig's effort may have been the most impressive start of the young
season. It is the lowest hit complete game effort of the year and it was
an extra inning complete game as well.
