Drysdale, Gibson Battle to Draw through 10; W. Davis Hits Game-Winner

LOS ANGELES, Apr. 15 (AP) - It was only the third day of the regular season, but Bob Gibson and Don Drysdale surely put together what will be regarded as one of the year's best pitching duels.  The pair of right-handed power pitchers battled to a scoreless tie through 10 full innings before Willie Davis' solo home run with one out in the bottom of the 11th off Ray Sadecki made the Dodgers 1-0 victors over the St. Louis Cardinals.  Drysdale had been lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 10th; reliever Ron Perranoski had tossed a perfect top of the 11th and picked up the win.

Both clubs had chances to score at various points in the first 10 innings.  In the top of the second, Ken Boyer led off with a single for St. Louis and moved to second when Johnny Lewis walked.  Curt Flood sacrificed the runners to second and third.  Dodgers manager Walt Alston, correctly surmising that few runs would be scored, had Drysdale intentionally walk Tim McCarver to fill the bases and the big right-hander induced Gibson to roll into a force play at the plate and Julian Javier to ground out to second to end the inning.

Gibson, meanwhile, retired the first 14 Los Angeles hitters before Frank Howard doubled with two outs in the fifth.  Johnny Roseboro struck out to end the inning.

The Dodgers appeared to have finally broken the scoreless deadlock in the seventh when Willie Davis led off with a triple to the gap in right-center field.  But Gibson was masterful in his response.  He retired Tommy Davis on a fly ball to right that was too shallow to score the runner from third, fanned Ron Fairly for the second out and retired Howard on a soft line drive to Javier at second.

After the second inning threat, Drysdale didn't allow a Cardinals baserunner to reach second until the ninth.  With two outs, Lewis singled and Flood walked.  But McCarver's liner found Fairly's glove at first base, extinguishing the threat.

The Dodgers managed another strong threat against Gibson in the tenth.  Back-to-back singles from Fairly and Howard left runners at first and second to open the inning and Roseboro neatly sacrificed them to second and third with one out.  Wes Parker pinch hit for Johnny Werhas but Cardinals skipper Johnny Keane had Gibson issue him a free pass to load the bases, putting the pressure on Alston.  Drysdale's spot was due up, but Alston had to go for the win and sent Wally Moon to the plate as a pinch hitter.  With the infield in, Gibson rose to the occasion again, forcing Moon to ground weakly to Javier at second who threw home for the force on Fairly.  Gibson then induced Maury Wills to ground into a 6-4 fielder's choice to end the frame.

Perranoski replaced Drysdale and set St. Louis down in order in the top of the 11th.  Keane decided that Gibson was spent and, for the bottom of the inning, inserted Sadecki, who took care of Junior Gilliam on an infield grounder.  Sadecki moved ahead of Willie Davis 0-1 and then hung a curve.  Davis deposited it into the right field bullpen, giving Los Angeles a hard fought 1-0 extra inning victory.  Despite Herculean performances, neither starting pitcher figured in the decision.
