GIANTS EXTEND WINNING STREAK TO 10
Thomson, Irvin Pull Club To 3 1/2 Of Lead
CINCINNATI, Sept. 20 (AP) - Bobby Thomson had three hits--two doubles and his
24th home run of the year--and Monte Irvin drove in three runs as the New York
Giants cruised past the Cincinnati Reds, 6-1, at Crosley Field. The
victory, coupled with Brooklyn's 4-2 loss at St. Louis, moved New York to within
3 1/2 games of first place.
The Giants took the lead in the first inning when Irvin's two-out single drove
home Alvin Dark, who had doubled two batters earlier.
New York then seized control of the game with a three-run top of the
third. Pitcher Jim Hearn led off the inning by reaching base on an error
by third baseman Sammy Meeks. Eddie Stanky sacrificed Hearn to second and
Dark followed with a single to right, scoring Hearn. Thomson then ripped a
double to the left-center field gap, and Stanky scored all the way from first
base to make it 3-0. When Irvin grounded a single to right, Thomson scored
and the Giants held a 4-0 advantage.
Ted Kluszewski led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run for the Reds, to
cut the deficit to three runs, but the Giants got the run back in the fifth on
Thomson's leadoff clout to left. It was Thomson's third home run in four
games and his seventh of the month.
New York capped the scoring in the ninth with two outs when Thomson doubled for
the second time in the game and scored on Irvin's single to right. Irvin
has now driven in at least one run in eight consecutive games, which ties him
for the longest streak of the year in the National League. (Gus Zernial of
the Philadelphia Athletics had a 12-game streak earlier this year, and holds the
major league mark.)
The Giants have seven games remaining this season; the Dodgers have 10 contests
left.
