CARDS' POHOLSKY STYMIES DODGERS
Fans 11 In Shutout; Brooklyn Lead Down to 4
ST. LOUIS, Sept. 18 (AP) - Tom Poholsky struck out a season high 11 en route to
his second shutout of the season, a 6-0 whitewashing of the Brooklyn Dodgers at
Sportsman's Park. The Dodgers' National League lead slipped to four games
as a function of the Giants victory over the Reds earlier in the day.
The Cardinals pecked away at Dodgers starter Ralph Branca with solo runs in the
first, third and fourth innings and then added on in the fifth and pushed across
two more in the seventh off reliever Clyde King. Brookyn's best scoring
opportunity came in the ninth.
Solly Hemus led off the first with a double, was sacrificed to third and scored
on Stan Musial's run-scoring fly ball. Branca's wildness allowed St. Louis
to double it's lead in the third. With one out, three consecutive batters
drew bases on balls and Enos Slaughter's long fly to right brought home the
game's second run. In the fourth, an error by third baseman Billy Cox on a
would-be double play ball set up Del Rice's RBI single to make it 3-0. In
the fifth, the Cardinals loaded the bases with none out but settled for only one
run on a ground out off the bat of Vern Benson. St. Louis capped the
scoring in the seventh when Musial led off with a walk and Slaughter followed
with his sixth home run of the season. The two-run shot cleared the screen
in right and landed in the pavilion.
Poholsky, meanwhile, was setting down the Dodgers with ease, scattering two hits
through six innings without allowing a walk. He struck out the side--Andy
Pafko, Gil Hodges and Cox--in the fifth. Through eight innings, Poholsky
had allowed just three isolated singles.
But in the ninth, the Dodgers threatened to get back in the game. Rube
Walker led off with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Cal Abrams.
Jim Russell struck out, but Carl Furillo singled to left. Pee Wee Reese
followed with an infield hit and the bases were loaded. But Poholsky rose
to the occasion, fanning Duke Snider and retiring Jackie Robinson on a pop fly
to shallow right that was caught by second baseman Red Schoendienst to end the
game.
With the Giants having won their ninth straight contest earlier, the Dodgers
find their lead having dwindled to four games. They still control their
own destiny, but the Giants have cut Brooklyn's lead by 5 1/2 games during the
winning streak. On the morning of September 9, the Dodgers held a
seemingly insurmountable 9 1/2 game edge.
The Dodgers have two more games with the Cardinals; the Giants have two more
contests with the Reds.
