REYNOLDS RISES TO OCCASION, BLANKS NATS
Berra's HR In 4-Run 4th Paces Offense
NEW YORK, Sept. 7 (AP) - It's been a mostly disappointing season for Allie
Reynolds. The New York right-hander has struggled with his control all
year long and was even removed from the starting rotation for several weeks in
August. But with the Yankees engaged in a relentless pennant race with the
Cleveland Indians, manager Casey Stengel has returned Reynolds to a starting
role and the right-hander has responded. He tossed a complete
game--walking only one--victory over St. Louis in his last outing and today he
fired what may have been his best start of the season--a four-hit shutout over
the Washington Senators at Yankee Stadium. The win was the seventh
straight for New York and left the club just 1/2 game behind Cleveland, pending
the outcome of the Indians' doubleheader at Sportsman's Park against the Browns.
For the second straight start, Reynolds' control was sharp. He walked just
one batter--Eddie Yost, leading off the game--while fanning six in recording his
second shutout of the season, while throwing only 95 pitches. Reynolds'
earned run average dropped below four for the first time since time in three
months.
The Senators never seriously threatened to score. Reynolds scattered a
single baserunner in each of the first four innings before recording his first
1-2-3 frame in the fifth. Gil Coan doubled to start the sixth, but never
advanced past second base. Reynolds, meanwhile, retired the final 12
Senators that he faced.
The Yankees did all their damage in the fourth off Washington starter Sid
Hudson. Gene Woodling started the inning by reaching on shortstop Pete
Runnels' error. Hudson then walked Joe DiMaggio, bringing up Yogi Berra.
The New York catcher wasted no time, crushing Hudson's first pitch off the
facade of the upper deck down the right field line for his 17th home run of the
year and a 3-0 lead. When Bobby Brown doubled into the left field corner,
Senators manager Bucky Harris had seen enough and replaced Hudson with Sandy
Consuegra who might not have been quite ready to enter the game. Consuegra
walked Gil McDougald on four pitches. Joe Collins flied to center, but
Reynolds looped a single to left, scoring Brown from second with the inning's
fourth run and when Goan misplayed the ball, McDougald advanced to third.
Consuegra then walked Mantle on four pitches before wiggling out of further
trouble by retiring Phil Rizzuto on a pop to first and Woodling on a grounder to
short.
The Yankees put runners on base throughout the remainder of the contest but were
unable to score. It didn't matter. Reynolds was in complete control
throughout.
