WITH LESS THAN HIS BEST WYNN SHUTS OUT BENGALS
Tribe Wins 7th Straight, Still A Game Up On Yanks
CLEVELAND, Sept. 5 (AP) - How's it been going for Early Wynn and the Cleveland
Indians? On a day when Wynn didn't have his best stuff, he still fired a
six-hit shutout and the Indians knocked off the Detroit Tigers, 4-0, on a rainy
day at Municipal Stadium. It was Cleveland's seventh straight victory and
kept the team one game in front of the New York Yankees--who also won--in the
American League.
Wynn repeatedly fell behind hitters, walked three and was forced to throw 146
pitches, but still managed to win his league-leading 18th game of the year while
completing his 21st contest. The shutout was his third.
The Indians gave Wynn all the runs he would need, it turned out, in the very
first inning. Dale Mitchell was hit by a pitch to start things off and
after Bobby Avila and Harry Simpson both flied out, Al Rosen doubled to
right-center, scoring Mitchell from first. Luke Easter than dropped a
single into left field and Rosen beat the throw to the plate to make it
2-0.
In the third, Simpson cracked his ninth home run of the year. The solo
shot landed in the right field bleachers and Cleveland and three-run advantage.
Two batters into the top of the fourth inning, what had been a light rain became
heavier. The game was delayed for nearly an hour-and-a-half, but Wynn
returned to the mound and set the Tigers down. Detroit starter Marlin
Stuart wasn't as flexible and did not resume his duties on the hill.
Pitching around baserunners--the Tigers stranded 10 on the game--and retiring
batters despite falling behind 3-1 numerous times, Wynn held Detroit scoreless
through the eighth. His teammates provided him with an insurance run in
the bottom half of the frame when Jim Hegan's fly ball to center scored Ray
Chapman.
Wynn actually seemed to get stronger as the game wore on. He retired 11 of
the final 12 Tigers he faced; the only exception was Hoot Evers, who reached
base on an error by Avila. He set Detroit down in order to close out the
game in the ninth inning.
The shutout was the third in the last six starts by Cleveland pitching, and is
Wynn's second in a row. His scoreless innings streak now stands at 22 1/3,
which ties him for the longest of the year with Mickey McDermott of the Red Sox.
