MANTLE'S HR IN 11TH COMPLETES RALLY, BEATS BOSOX
Yanks Win 6th Straight, Keep Pace With Tribe
NEW YORK, Sept. 5 (AP) - The New York Yankees rallied for two runs in the bottom
of the ninth to tie the game and went on to win the contest, 6-5, over the
Boston Red Sox on Mickey Mantle's one-out solo home run in the 11th
inning. It was New York's sixth straight victory and allowed the club to
keep pace with the equally hot Cleveland Indians in what is turning into an epic
chase for the American League pennant. The Yankees are now 30-20 in
one-run games on the season. Better than 48,000 were on hand at the
Stadium, the fourth consecutive Yankees crowd of at least 40,000.
Things seemed to be going well for the New Yorkers through six innings.
Gene Woodling popped his 21st home run of the year, a two-run shot, in the
second inning to give the Yankees the lead and Walt Dropo's second inning solo
home run for Boston was countered by a Johnny Mize RBI ground out in the fourth.
But the 3-1 New York lead evaporated in a flash in the top of the seventh.
Starter Vic Raschi, who had been cruising comfortably through six, gave up a
long leadoff home run to Ted Williams, his 32nd of the season, to cut the
Yankees lead to a single run. One out later, Billy Goodman tripled to
right-center and Dropo grounded a sharp infield single off Raschi's leg, scoring
Goodman to tie the game. Charlie Maxwell then drove an 0-1 fastball from
Raschi just inside the right field foul pole for a two-run home run to complete
the role reversal; the Red Sox had entered the inning trailing by two runs but
now seized an advantage of the same size. Boston had a chance to blow the
game open. Buddy Rosar struck out but Raschi walked his counterpart, Red
Sox starter Leo Kiely and then allowed a double to Dom DiMaggio that left
runners at second and third. But Raschi narrowly avoided further
difficulty by fanning Johnny Pesky.
Kiely pitched out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh and Yankees reliever Bob
Kuzava did the same in the top of the eighth. Both teams were retired
1-2-3 in their next offensive opportunities, which sent the game to the bottom
of the ninth with the Red Sox still on top 5-3.
Yogi Berra opened the frame with a single to center. Gil McDougald then
drove a Kiely pitch over the head of Dom DiMaggio in center field for a triple,
scoring Berra. The lead was now down to one run with the potential tying
tally just 90 feet from home plate. Joe Collins then sliced a single to
left, scoring McDougald and tying the game. Kiely's day was done; he was
replaced by Ellis Kinder. Jerry Coleman's sacrifice moved Collins into
scoring position with one out. Mantle walked and Bobby Brown was called
upon to hit for Kuzava. Brown's swinging bunt went for an infield hit and
loaded the bases with one out. Suddenly, the Yankees seemed poised to win
the game. But Phil Rizzuto's shallow fly to right did nothing except
result in the inning's second out and Woodling flied to left to send the game to
extra frames.
Both teams had mild threats extinguished in the tenth inning. The Red Sox
went down in order in the top of the 11th. In the bottom half, Kinder
retired Coleman on a routine ground ball to short and then fell behind Mantle
3-1. The next pitch landed roughly halfway up the right field
grandstand. It was Mantle's 12th home run of the season. Joe
Ostrowski tossed a pair of scoreless frames and was credited with the win.
