CARDS SWEEP CUBS, ECLIPSE .500 MARK
First Time Since April
CHICAGO, Sept. 5 (AP) - On April 27, the St. Louis Cardinals tripped the Chicago
Cubs at Wrigley Field to move to 4-3 on the season. They dropped the next
two games to the Cubs to fall below .500. As late as July 16, the
Cardinals were a full 15 games below the break even mark, mired in a fight with
Cincinnati for sixth place.
After sweeping a pair from the Cubs today at Wrigley Field St. Louis moved two
games above .500--their first trip to the positive side of the ledger since that
day in April--and are now challenging Pittsburgh for third in the National
League.
Harry Breechen tossed seven effective innings for the Cardinals in the opener,
and Tom Poholsky fired a pair of scoreless frames to close out the game in a 4-2
victory. Stan Musial reached base safely four times--including his
league-leading 14th triple--and Enos Slaughter, Hal Rice and Billy Johnson all
drove in runs for St. Louis.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals had to battle from behind early. The Cubs
battered starter Gerry Staley and drove him from the mound in the third
inning. St. Louis held a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the third, but
five of the first six batters in the inning reached base safely for
Chicago. Phil Cavarretta's RBI single brought home the third run of the
frame and was the coup de grace for Staley who was replaced by Red Munger.
Munger walked Smoky Burgess to begin his stint, but was sensational thereafter,
tossing 4 2/3 innings of shutout ball.
The Cardinals immediately erased their two-run deficit, exploding for four runs
in the top of the third off Cubs starter Joe Hatten. Johnson led off with
a single and Chuck Diering walked and Del Rice followed with his ninth home run
of the year to put St. Louis back on top, this time for good. Munger
helped his own cause with with a double and, one out later, scored on Red
Schoendienst's two-bagger.
The Cardinals capped the scoring when Johnson led off the fifth with his 16th
home run of the season.
Munger remained on the hill for St. Louis through the seventh inning and, job
well done, was replaced by Dick Bokelmann, who a pair of scorless innings of his
own. Meanwhile, the Chicago bullpen was every bit as effective. Monk
Dubiel pitched four shutout innings for the Cubs and Dutch Leonard threw one of
his own.
Despite their strong play since the All-Star break, the Cardinals are on the
verge of elimination. Any combination of St. Louis losses and Brooklyn
wins totaling three will finish the Cardinals.
