TRIBE RALLIES TWICE, SWEEPS DH FROM CHISOX
3-0 Deficit Overcome In Both Games, 2-Run Rally In
9th Wins Nightcap
CLEVELAND, Sept. 3 (AP) - The Cleveland Indians rallied from a pair of 3-0
deficits and swept a doubleheader from the Chicago White Sox at Municipal
Stadium. The Indians tallied twice in the bottom of the ninth inning of
the nightcap to secure the sweep. Cleveland's lead in the American League
stands at 1 1/2 games pending the outcome of New York's doubleheader at
Philadelphia.
In the opener, the White Sox pushed across a pair of runs in the first inning
off Indians starter Bob Feller on RBI singles off the bats of Eddie Robinson and
Jim Busby and extended the lead to three in the third on Ray Coleman's
run-scoring fielder's choice. But Feller stiffened and held Chicago
scoreless for the remainder of game.
Feller's teammates rose to the occasion. Still down 3-0 in the bottom of
the fifth, Cleveland rallied. Barney McCoskey drew a lead off walk.
Ray Boone followed with a potential double play grounder to short but Chico
Carrasquel's throw drew Nellie Fox off the bag at second leaving all hands
safe. Jim Hegan then made the White Sox pay by driving Lou Kretlow's 1-0
pitch deep into the left field stands, perhaps 15 feet inside the foul pole for
a three-run home run and a tie game.
After Feller retired Chicago in order in the top of the sixth, the Indians took
the lead in the bottom half. With one out, Al Rosen walked and then Luke
Easter belted his 21st home run into the bleachers in right field to give
Cleveland a 5-3 lead.
Feller was sailing along, having retired 17 consecutive batters, when Eddie
Robinson broke the string with a two-out triple in the top of the eighth, but
the Indians starter retired Ray Coleman on a ground ball to second to end the
frame.
Cleveland stranded a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the eighth and the
White Sox threatened in the top half of the ninth. Busby led off with a
single and, after Bud Sheely flied to center, Carrasquel popped up in foul
ground to the left side. Shortstop Ray Boone dropped the ball for an error
and Carrasquel had new life. Feller rose to the occasion, however, and
retired the White Sox infielder on a grounder to third, with Busby advancing to
second. Pinch hitter Floyd Baker reached on an infield single, with Busby
taking third, and the go-ahead run came to the plate in the form of Bob
Dillinger. The count ran to 3-2 but Feller took care of the Chicago third
baseman on a grounder to Bobby Avila to end the game.
The nightcap started out much like the opener. White Sox starter Harry
Dorish helped himself by driving home Chico Carrasquel, who had reached on a
Boone error with one out in the third inning.
The White Sox extended their lead in the fourth. Eddie Robinson's
run-scoring fly ball plated Nellie Fox--who had led off the frame with a
triple--to give the White Sox a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Al Zarilla's
double scored Jim Busby and Chicago led 2-0.
This time, the Indians chipped away at the deficit, beginning in the
sixth. With one out, Dale Mitchell doubled to right and was driven home by
Bobby Avila's single.
Cleveland cut the Chicago lead to one in the seventh. Al Rosen led off
with a double, moved to third on Luke Easter's roller to first and scored on a
single to right-center by pinch hitter Larry Doby.
Relievers Lou Brissie and Bob Chakales held the White Sox scoreless through the
top of the ninth and Dorish attempted to finish off the complete game in the
bottom half of the inning. It started off well enough when Avila grounded
out, but Harry Simpson walked and was replaced at first by speedy pinch runner
Doug Hansen, a recent call-up. Rosen followed with his second double of
the contest, into the right-center field gap. Hansen came all the way
around to score, just beating a relay from Fox, and the game was tied.
Dorish retired Easter on a tapper back to the mound and then, with first base
open, intentionally walked Doby to bring up Boone. But the shortstop, who
had committed errors in both games, redeemed himself and spoiled the Chicago
strategy by slashed a liner past Robinson at first base, down the right field
line. Rosen scored easily on the hit--scored a double--and the Indians had
their Labor Day sweep.
