KELLNER FIRES 1-HITTER

CLEVELAND, Aug. 29 (AP) - Alex Kellner became the sixth pitcher to toss a
complete game one-hitter in the major leagues this year and the Philadelphia
Athletics shutout the Cleveland Indians, 5-0, at Municipal Stadium on an
unseasonably cool day along Lake Erie. Kellner allowed only one baserunner
and that was a two-out single to his counterpart, Indians starter Mike Garcia,
in the sixth inning.
The Athletics took the pressure off Kellner early, scoring five times in the
first three innings, with the assistance of some shoddy Cleveland defense.
Eddie Joost opened the ball game with a double, advanced to third on a Garcia
wild pitch, and scored on Ferris Fain's slow roller to third.
Philadelphia then broke the game open in the third. Joe Tipton opened the
frame with a single and was forced at second on Kellner's grounder to
third. Joost singled to left-center, putting runners on the corners with
one out. Fain then hit what appeared to be a double play ball to short but
Ray Boone kicked the grounder leaving all hands safe. Kellner scored on
the play to put the Athletics ahead, 2-0. Elmer Valo followed with a
double to center. Joost scored and when center fielder Sam Chapman
misplayed the ball, Fain also scored, with Valo taking third. Gus Zernial
grounded to second with the infield in, momentarily stranding Valo at third, but
Hank Majeski singled, plating Valo with the fourth run of the inning. Only
one of the four runs was earned. Garcia turned the screws on the Athletics
from that point on, but it was too late.
Kellner retired the first 17 batters he faced, yielded the clean single to
Garcia, then retired the next 10 in a row to end the game. The only batter
Kellner fanned was the last--leadoff man Dale Mitchell.
In a curious turn, all six of the pitchers with one-hitters this season have
turned the trick in the American League, but the season's only no-hitter to
date--by Sal Maglie--was accomplished in the National League.
