WYNN, TRIBE BOUNCE BACK, RECLAIM SOLE AL LEAD
Rosen's 3-Run Blast Big Blow
CLEVELAND, Aug. 24 (AP) - After absorbing a shutout at the hands of Vic Raschi
in the first game of their big series, the Cleveland Indians received a stellar
pitching performance of their own from Early Wynn to beat the New York Yankees,
3-1, before a crowd of nearly 59,000 at Municipal Stadium.
Wynn matched Raschi in another sense, tying the New York right-hander for the
American League lead in wins with 16. The Indians starter fired a complete
game, scattering five hits and fanning three without walking a single
batter. The Yankees' starter, left-hander Stubby Overmire, didn't pitch a
poor game himself, but still came out on the losing end.
The big blow in the game came in the bottom of the third. It was scoreless
when the AL's leading hitter, Dale Mitchell, led off with a double to
left-center field. Bobby Avila attempted to sacrifice Mitchell to third,
but his bunt to the left of the mound was so good that he beat it out for an
infield single. Larry Doby followed with a tapper back to Overmire, who
held Mitchell at third and still had time force Avila at second base for the
first out of the inning. That brought up Al Rosen who deposited Overmire's
first pitch into the left field grandstand for a three-run home run. It
was Rosen's 20th long ball of the season and it gave Cleveland a lead it
wouldn't relinquish.
The Yankees broke the shutout in the top of fifth. Johnny Mize singled to
center to open the frame and was forced at second on Bobby Brown's fielder's
choice. Gil McDougald lined a single to left-center, advancing Brown to
third. Overmmire's fly to Doby in center field was deep enough to score
Brown, cutting the Indians' lead to 3-1. Catcher Jim Hegan then cut down
McDougald trying to steal second to end the inning.
Neither team scored again. New York errors helped create several Cleveland
threats but Overmire and reliever Bobby Hogue--making his first appearance in a
Yankees uniform--were able to continuously rise to the occasion for the
Yankees. Wynn, meanwhile, allowed only two harmless singles the rest of
the way in stifling the New York attack.
Mickey Mantle, making his first appearance since suffering an injury on July 13,
went 0-for-4 on the day.
The two clubs will meet for the rubber match in the series finale tomorrow in
front of what the Cleveland front office anticipates may be the largest crowd of
the season in the major leagues to date. The largest crowd thus
far--67,118--came in the Yankees' home opener on April 17. The Indians'
biggest home crowd is 66,712 for their home opener on April 20.
