PHILS ROBERTS 1ST TO 20
Ennis, Ashburn Key Comeback Victory
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 22 (AP) - RBI singles off the bats of pinch hitter Del Ennis
and Richie Ashburn keyed a two-run seventh, making a winner of Robin Roberts and
the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-2, over the Chicago Cubs at Shibe Park. With the
assistance of two shutout innings of relief from Jim Konstanty, Roberts became
the first 20-game winner in the major leagues this season. The Phillies
right-hander has won his last four starts.
The Cubs pushed across a run in the top of the first when Eddie Miksis and Gene
Hermanski opened with singles. Frank Baumholtz's fly ball to center plated
Miksis with the tally.
The Phillies knotted the score in the fourth. Back-to-back singles off the bats
of Dick Sisler and Bill Nicholson gave Philadelphia runners at first and third
with no outs and Sisler scored on Tommy Browns double play grounder.
The game remained tied until the top of the seventh when the Cubs regained the
lead. Pitcher Bob Rush led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to
second by Miksis. Hermanski's long fly to center moved Rush to third.
Baumholtz's grounder to short appeared to end the frame but shortstop Granny
Hamner kicked it, allowing Rush to score with the tie-breaking run.
But the Phillies caught and passed the Cubs in the home half of the same inning.
With one out, Hamner attempted to atone for his miscue with a double to the gap
in left-center field. Del Wilber walked and Ennis, who was enjoying a rare day
off, was called upon to hit for Roberts. He immediately singled up the middle,
scoring Hamner to tie the game, with Wilber advancing to second. Putsy Caballero
flied to center for the second out but Ashburn blooped a single into shallow
center to score Wilber with the lead run.
Konstanty came on to retire the Cubs in order in the eighth and pitched around a
two-out walk in the ninth to secure the victory.
The Cubs, who have dropped six straight and continue to sink further into the
National League center, blew golden opportunities to score in the fourth and
sixth innings. In both frames, Hank Sauer led off with a triple and was
followed, with the infield drawn in, by weak ground balls off the bat of Randy
Jackson for the first out. Both times Phil Cavarretta was walked to set up a
double play. In the fourth, Bruce Edwards was retired on a pop fly to shallow
center and Roy Smalley grounded out to end the inning. In the sixth, Edwards
walked to fill the bases but Smalley rolled into a 5-4-3 double play to end the
threat.
Roberts record against Chicago is now 5-1 on the season. The five victories
against the Cubs are the right-hander's most against any team this season.
