EASTER'S BLASTS LEAD TRIBE TO 10TH STRAIGHT 'W'
Feller is 4th Cleveland Hurler to Reach Double
Digits in Wins
CLEVELAND, Aug. 13 (AP) - Luke Easter clubbed a pair of home runs and Bob Feller
worked eight innings as the Cleveland Indians outlasted the Detroit Tigers,
10-5, at Municipal Stadium. It was the tenth straight win for the Indians,
the longest winning streak in the major leagues this year.
Feller's win was his tenth of the season. Cleveland becomes the first team
in either league with four starters each of whom has accumulated at least ten
wins.
Detroit drew first blood with a pair of runs in the top of the third. The
first four Tigers reached base safely, but Feller induced Vic Wertz to hit into
a double play, which prevented what might have been a much bigger inning.
The Indians immediately countered with three runs in the bottom of the third,
all of them coming off the bat of Easter. After one-out walks to Bobby
Avila and Larry Doby, Easter belted a Marlin Stuart fastball deep into the right
field grandstand, putting Cleveland on top 3-2.
An error led to a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth, giving the
Tigers the lead. Ray Boone booted Joe Ginsberg's grounder for an error to
start the inning. After Hoot Evers struck out, Neil Berry singled and
Stuart sacrificed the runners to second and third with two outs. Jerry
Priddy's single scored both runners and Detroit held a 4-3 lead.
Once again the Indians immediately countered, scoring the tying run in the
bottom of the fourth on Dale Mitchell's RBI single.
Cleveland took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. Mitchell and
Avila laced back-to-back singles with one out, leaving runners at first and
second. Easter popped to short but Larry Doby bounced a single through the
box, scoring Mitchell with the go-ahead run and Al Rosen followed by lining a
double into the right field corner plating two more runs and putting the Indians
ahead 7-4.
Pat Mullin's leadoff home run off Feller in the top of the eighth cut Detroit's
deficit to two runs but the Indians effectively salted the game away with three
insurance runs in bottom of the frame. Easter's second longball of the
contest, just inside the right field foul pole, scored Avila and Rosen followed
with a solo home run to cap the scoring.
